GPX, which most devices export; KML and KMZ from Google Earth and Google My Maps; TCX from Garmin devices; GeoJSON; and shapefiles, either as a .zip or as the .shp chosen together with its .dbf (the attributes) and .prj (the coordinate system).

How do I open a shapefile online without GIS software?

Drop the shapefile's .zip on the page, or select its .shp, .dbf and .prj files together and drop them all at once. The shapes are drawn on a map, each one's attributes appear when you click it, and the whole layer can be saved as GeoJSON. Without the .prj file, a shapefile in a national grid cannot be placed, and the page says so.

Is my route uploaded?

The track file is read and drawn entirely in your browser. The map tiles underneath it are fetched from openstreetmap.org, so those requests do leave your machine - but the track itself never does, which matters when it starts at your front door.

Why would I want GeoJSON?

It is the format most modern mapping libraries and GIS tools expect. Exporting to it is the usual way to get a track out of a device-specific format and into something else.

Can I edit or join tracks?

No. This views and converts; it does not edit.

Can I use it without the map?

Yes. Untick Show the track on a map before opening the file and the track details, elevation chart and export all work with no tile requests made at all. Hiding the map after opening stops any further requests.

About this GPX viewer

Open a GPX, KML or TCX track from a watch or handheld GPS, see it drawn on a map with its distance, its climb and descent, and a chart of its elevation when the file records heights, and convert it to GeoJSON.

It also opens map files that are not tracks: KMZ from Google Earth and Google My Maps, GeoJSON, and shapefiles, the GIS format councils, governments and mapping software hand out. Click any shape or point to see its name and attributes. A shapefile in a national grid, such as British National Grid or a UTM zone, is converted to longitude and latitude using its .prj file.

The map tiles come from OpenStreetMap; the track itself is read in the page and is not uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

How to view a GPS track

Open a .gpx, .kml or .tcx file from your watch, handheld GPS or phone, or a .kmz, .geojson or shapefile. For a shapefile that is not zipped, choose the .shp, .dbf and .prj files together.
See the route drawn on the map - or untick the map first if you would rather nothing is fetched from OpenStreetMap.
Read off the summary of the track - what the file actually recorded.
Export it as .geojson if you need it in another mapping tool.
