How do I convert a MOD or XM file to MP3?

Open the module here, wait a second or two while it is played into sound, then choose Save as MP3. The MP3 is made in your browser at 192 kb/s; Save as WAV gives the uncompressed sound instead.

Why does the song stop after 20 minutes?

Some modules loop for ever, and a few play for longer than a browser tab can hold in memory as sound, so the first 20 minutes are played and saved. Most songs end long before that.

Does it sound like the original Amiga or PC?

libopenmpt plays each format the way its tracker did, including the quirks of ProTracker and FastTracker 2 that songs relied on, and it imitates the Amiga's sound for Amiga modules. A few formats that depend on special hardware, such as AdLib FM instruments in some .s3m files, are emulated too.

Is my module uploaded?

No. The song is played into sound by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing about it is sent anywhere.

About this MOD player

Tracker music is how computer music was made on the Amiga and early PCs, and still is in the demo scene and many games: a module file holds its own instrument samples and the patterns that say which to play, when and how, so a whole song fits in a few kilobytes. Trackers such as ProTracker (.mod), FastTracker 2 (.xm), Impulse Tracker (.it), Scream Tracker (.s3m) and OpenMPT (.mptm) all saved their own formats, and today's music players and phones mostly will not play any of them.

This page plays them with libopenmpt, the library behind OpenMPT and many music players, which reads more than sixty tracker formats faithfully. The song is played into sound first, in a second or two, so you can scrub through it, and the pattern playing scrolls past as it would in the tracker. You can then save it as an MP3 or WAV that plays anywhere. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline. For MIDI files, use the MIDI Player.
