Opens an EPUB and reads it in the browser, with a table of contents and adjustable text size.
No reader application, no account, and no copy of your book on anybody else’s server. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
- Can I read with a dark or sepia page?
- Yes. Press Aa above the book to choose a light, sepia or dark page, a serif or sans-serif font in place of the book's own, and roomier line spacing. A− and A+ change the text size. All of it is remembered in this browser for the next book too, and if the site is in dark mode the reader starts on the dark page.
- Does it work with library books?
- Only if the file has no DRM. Books borrowed through most library apps are encrypted and have to be read in the app they came from.
- Is my book uploaded?
- No, and nothing inside the book is allowed to call home either. A chapter can reference an image or a stylesheet on somebody else's server, and fetching one would tell whoever published the book your address, your browser and the moment you opened it. Those requests are refused, so the only thing that loads is what is inside the file.
- Does it remember where I stopped?
- Yes, in this browser. Your place in each book is kept in the browser's own storage, keyed by the book's identifier, and the book opens there next time. Your text size, page colour, font and line spacing are remembered the same way. Nothing is sent anywhere, and clearing site data forgets it.
- Can it open .mobi or .azw3 files?
- Yes. Drop a Kindle book (.mobi, .azw3 or .azw) here and it opens with its cover, details and contents, a section at a time. FictionBook (.fb2) e-books, common in Russian and Eastern European libraries, open the same way, zipped or not. Books bought from the Kindle store usually carry DRM and cannot be opened by anything but Amazon's apps; ones without DRM, such as free books and your own, read fine.
- Why use this instead of an ebook app?
- For reading one file quickly without installing anything, or on a machine that is not yours - the sample chapter you just downloaded, or a book you want to look at before committing to it.
