Free online PDF tools

Edit, convert, sign and compress PDFs without uploading them. Every tool on this page runs in the browser, so the file stays on your machine.

PDFs are where the privacy question actually bites. A contract, a payslip, a bank statement or a scan of a passport is not something to hand to a free website in exchange for a merge or a conversion, and yet that is exactly what most online PDF tools require. Everything on this page does the work inside your own browser instead.

The PDF Toolkit merges, splits, reorders, annotates, redacts and password-protects, and Compress PDF shrinks a file to the size a form asks for with the gentlest compression that fits. Sign PDF puts a drawn, typed or scanned signature on a contract and fills in its form fields, Create Fillable PDF finds the blank lines and boxes in a plain PDF and turns them into fields you can type in, tick or sign, and Edit PDF Text changes the words already in a PDF - a typo, a name, a date - in its own font where it has the letters. Unlock PDF takes the password off a PDF you can already open, or removes its printing, copying and editing restrictions, which needs no password at all, and Compare PDFs shows what changed between two versions of a document, word by word and page by page.

For conversions, PDF to Word keeps the fonts, columns, tables and pictures, PDF to Excel pulls tables out with every cell in its column, and the Bank Statement Converter does the same for statements, as Excel, CSV, OFX or QIF, checking every running balance. PDF to JPG and JPG to PDF move between pages and pictures, Word to PDF and Excel to PDF go the other way for Office files, keeping the print layout, and DjVu to PDF and XPS to PDF turn those two older formats into PDFs with searchable text.

Then the specialist ones: Bates Numbering stamps a running number across one PDF or a whole production, PDF Layers turns a PDF's layers on and off and saves only the ones you want - one size of a sewing pattern, one floor of a plan - and the XFA Form Filler opens the government and bank forms that show only a "Please wait..." page outside Adobe Reader and lets you fill them in. All free, with no account, and you can confirm nothing is uploaded: open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab, and do the job.
