How is words per minute calculated?

On the standard convention of five characters to a word, which is what every typing test uses so that scores are comparable. It is not a count of actual words.

What is a good speed?

Around 40 wpm is a competent office pace and 70 or more is fast. Accuracy matters more than raw speed for real work, because correcting mistakes costs more time than typing slowly would have.

What is the heatmap for?

It shows which keys you mistype most, which is the part that actually makes you better. Speed comes from fixing a handful of consistently weak keys, not from trying harder.

Why practise the home row separately?

Because touch typing is built on it. Drilling those keys until they need no thought is what lets the rest follow, and it is worth more than repeating whole passages.

Is my typing recorded anywhere?

No. The test runs in the page and no score is sent or stored, so there is nothing to sign up for and no leaderboard to worry about.
