Which versions of Microsoft Project does it open?

Files saved by Project 2010 and every version since, which all use the same .mpp format, and Project XML from any version. Files from Project 2007 and earlier are not read yet: open them in Project and save again, or save them as XML. Password-protected plans cannot be opened, because Project encrypts them.

Not here: this is a viewer. To change a plan without Project, save it as Project XML and open that in ProjectLibre or GanttProject, which are free, or edit the CSV in a spreadsheet.

Is the plan uploaded?

No. The file is read by your browser on your computer and is never sent anywhere, which matters for plans with client names, costs and dates in them.

Why does a task look different from Project?

The page shows the dates, durations and progress Project saved, but it does not reschedule anything, and it draws its own Gantt chart rather than Project's custom bar styles. Calendars, views, filters and timephased data are not read.

About this MPP file viewer

An .mpp file is a plan made in Microsoft Project, and Project is the only program that opens one: it is sold separately from Office, costs a monthly subscription, and does not run on a Mac. So the people a plan is sent to - clients, suppliers, the rest of the team - often cannot read it. The usual answers are a paid viewer to install or a website the plan has to be uploaded to.

This page reads the file in your browser and shows it as Project does: the task list with its outline, durations, dates, progress, links and resources beside a Gantt chart, with milestones, summary tasks, the critical path and the baseline. Click a task to see everything about it, including its notes. Save the tasks or resources as CSV for Excel, the whole plan as Microsoft Project XML, or print the Gantt chart or save it as PDF. The reader is a port of MPXJ, the open-source library that ProjectLibre and many other tools use to open Project files; its source is published under the LGPL at /source/mpxj/. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and once you have used it, it keeps working offline.
