How do I convert MIDI to MP3?

Open the MIDI file here, wait a few seconds while it is played through the instruments, then choose Save as MP3. The MP3 is made in your browser at 192 kb/s; Save as WAV gives the uncompressed sound instead.

Why does my MIDI file sound different in other players?

A MIDI file only says which instrument to use, not what it sounds like; every player brings its own sounds. This page uses GeneralUser GS, a well-regarded free set, so a song can sound richer or simply different from Windows' old built-in synth or a keyboard's own sounds.

Can I see the lyrics of a karaoke file?

Yes. When a .kar file (or a MIDI file with lyrics) plays, the lines appear under the player and the words light up as they are sung. Click a line to go back to it.

Is my MIDI file uploaded?

No. The song is played into sound by this browser tab on your own device; the only download is the instrument sounds, from this site, the first time.

About this MIDI player

A MIDI file is not a recording: it is the score, a list of which notes to play on which instruments and when. A computer has to perform it with a set of instrument sounds, and Windows and Macs no longer come with a good one - so .mid files open silently, or in a program that sounds like a 1990s sound card, and phones often will not open them at all. Karaoke .kar files are MIDI files with the lyrics written in, timed to the music.

This page performs the file with GeneralUser GS, a free set of instrument sounds for all 128 General MIDI instruments and the drum kits, through SpessaSynth, an open-source synthesizer. The whole song is played into sound first, in a few seconds, so you can then scrub through it freely, sing along with the lyrics, and save it as an MP3 or WAV that plays anywhere. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
