Which QuarkXPress versions does it open?

Documents saved by QuarkXPress 3.1 to 4.1, on a Mac or on Windows. QuarkXPress 5 and later changed the file format and are not read yet; if you have QuarkXPress, save a copy down to version 4 (File, Save As, Version), or export it as PDF.

Why are some picture boxes empty?

QuarkXPress does not store most pictures inside the document: it links to the image files beside it, and the open-source reader does not draw pictures yet. Picture boxes show as frames in their place, so the layout and text are all there; the images themselves are in the folder the document came from.

How do I convert a QXD file to PDF without QuarkXPress?

Open it here and choose Save as PDF: every page goes into one vector PDF with selectable text, sharp at any zoom. Fonts the document used that your computer lacks are replaced by similar ones, so check line breaks before sending it to print.

Can I open a QXD file in InDesign or Affinity Publisher?

Older versions of InDesign opened QuarkXPress 3.3 to 4.1 documents directly; current ones need a paid conversion plug-in, and Affinity Publisher does not open them. Saving the pages here as PDF or SVG gives a file both can place or open, and the text can be saved separately to flow into a new layout.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and drawn in your browser by a copy of the reader served from this site.

About this QuarkXPress viewer

A .qxd file is a QuarkXPress document: the newsletters, brochures, magazines, books and adverts laid out in the 1990s and 2000s, when QuarkXPress was the standard program for print design. QuarkXPress is now an expensive subscription, and InDesign opens old .qxd files only through a paid conversion plug-in. So an archive of old layouts, or a document a printer or designer kept, is often stuck.

This page reads the document with libqxp, the open-source QuarkXPress reader LibreOffice Draw uses, compiled to run in your browser, and draws each page: text boxes with their fonts, sizes and colours, boxes, frames and lines. Save it as a PDF to print or archive, a page as SVG to edit in Inkscape or Illustrator, or all the text to reuse it. The file is never uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
