Question 1

How do I convert a Publisher file to PDF without Publisher?

Accepted Answer

Open it here and choose Print or save as PDF, then pick "Save as PDF" (or "Microsoft Print to PDF") as the printer. The PDF keeps the layout and has real text, not a picture of it, and it opens on any computer or phone.

Question 2

Why does it not look exactly like it does in Publisher?

Accepted Answer

The page is redrawn from what the open-source reader gets out of the file, and Publisher's own text layout is not part of that, so line breaks can fall slightly differently and a font you do not have is replaced by a similar one. Some things the reader does not pass on at all: WordArt, the web address behind a link, and automatic page numbers. Pictures stored as Windows metafiles (WMF or EMF), which many Publisher templates use, cannot be drawn by a browser and are shown as a labelled box.

Question 3

Can I edit the publication here?

Accepted Answer

No - this shows it, prints it and gets the text out. To edit it without Publisher, LibreOffice Draw (free) can import .pub files on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Question 4

What happens to my .pub files when Publisher is retired?

Accepted Answer

Microsoft has said Publisher will no longer be supported after October 2026. Files you already have still work in an installed copy for a while, but saving them as PDF now - here or in Publisher - means they stay readable everywhere.

Question 5

Is my .pub file uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. It is read and drawn by your browser, using a copy of the reader served from this site. Nothing about the file is sent anywhere.
