Is it safe to open a private WhatsApp chat here?

Yes. The chat is unzipped and read by your own browser and never sent anywhere - there is no server that sees it and nothing is stored after you close the tab. You can check in your browser’s developer tools: the Network tab shows nothing of the chat being sent. The .zip is unpacked by the browser’s own built-in decompression, so no library is downloaded for it either.

How do I save a WhatsApp chat as a PDF?

Open the export here and press PDF / Print, then choose Save as PDF as the printer. The whole chat is laid out with its dates, names, times and photos, however long it is.

Why are some photos missing?

Either the chat was exported Without media, in which case those messages say the media was not included, or WhatsApp left some out, since it limits how much a single export can carry. The files that are missing show by name, so they can be found on the phone and saved separately.

Can it open a WhatsApp backup from Google Drive or iCloud?

No. Those backups are encrypted with a key only WhatsApp holds, and are meant to be restored into the app, not read. Export chat is the way to get a readable copy of a conversation out of WhatsApp.

What if the phone is gone but there is an iTunes or Finder backup?

An iPhone backup made on a computer holds WhatsApp's chats too. Open it in the iPhone Backup Viewer and choose the WhatsApp tab: every chat is there, with its photos and voice notes, with no export needed.

About this WhatsApp chat viewer

WhatsApp's Export chat makes a plain text file, plus the photos, videos and voice notes as loose files beside it - fine for a computer, hard for a person to read. This puts it back together as the conversation it was: bubbles, names in colour, a heading for each day, and the pictures, videos and voice notes where they were sent, playable in the page.

A long chat opens at its first message, with Latest message a click away; search finds any word, link or file name across the whole history, and the date picker jumps straight to a day. PDF / Print lays out the entire chat for printing or saving as a PDF, photos included - useful for keeping a record of a conversation, or for handing one to a solicitor or an insurer. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
