Is it safe to open an installer here?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The page only reads the package: no custom action, script or program inside it is ever run, and nothing is written to your system except the files you choose to save. A file you save is exactly as the installer has it, so treat a program you take out of an untrusted installer with the same care as the installer itself.

It says the files are outside the package. What does that mean?

Some installers keep their files in separate cabinet files, such as Data1.cab, that come beside the .msi on the disc or in the download. The message names the ones this package expects; open those .cab files in the Archive Toolkit. Their files keep the installer's internal names there, since the names are in the .msi.

Can it open a setup.exe?

Often. Many setup programs are archives with a small program in front, and the Archive Toolkit opens those made with NSIS, Microsoft's cabinet tools or 7-Zip. Some of those carry an .msi inside, which can be saved and then opened here. Installers made with Inno Setup or InstallShield do not open.

Can I see the installer's tables, registry entries or custom actions?

Accepted Answer

No. This page shows the files a package installs, not the rest of its database. Microsoft's Orca, part of the Windows SDK, shows and edits the tables.

Is my installer uploaded?

Accepted Answer

No. The package is read by this browser tab, with 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly; nothing is sent anywhere.
