How do I play an SWF file without Flash Player?

Drop it here. Ruffle plays it in the page, with nothing to install and no plugin. It plays nearly all older Flash (ActionScript 1 and 2: most animations, cartoons and games up to about 2008) and much of the newer ActionScript 3, though some later games use features it does not have yet. If one does not run, the newest Ruffle release may.

Can I convert an SWF to MP4 or GIF?

Yes: press Record, let it play (or play the game), and press Stop. The recording, with its sound, can be saved as a video or opened in the Video Converter to make an MP4 or a GIF. It records in real time, so a two-minute cartoon takes two minutes.

How do I get the pictures and sounds out of an SWF?

They are listed beside the player as soon as the file opens. Click a picture to save it, or Save all for a ZIP of everything. JPEGs are saved exactly as they are stored; bitmaps and images with transparency become PNGs; sounds are saved as MP3 or WAV, and a soundtrack streamed along the timeline as one MP3. Drawings made of vector shapes are not stored as pictures, so they are not listed - recording captures them.

Is it safe to open an old SWF file here?

Safer than the Flash plugin ever was. Ruffle runs inside the browser's sandbox like any web page, written in a memory-safe language, and this page also blocks the file from reaching the internet or opening links. The file never leaves your computer.

About this SWF player

Flash Player was switched off at the end of 2020, and browsers no longer open .swf files, so a folder of old Flash games, animations, cartoons or e-learning modules became unplayable overnight. This page plays them again with Ruffle, an open-source Flash Player emulator written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, served from this site. It runs in the page's sandbox, like any website, so an old file cannot do what the Flash plugin used to - and here it is also kept off the network, so it cannot call home. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

Beyond playing, the page reads the file itself: its Flash version, stage size and frame rate, and the pictures and sounds stored inside, which can be saved one by one or all at once - JPEGs as they are, bitmaps and transparent images as PNG, sounds as MP3 or WAV. And it can record what plays, picture and sound, to keep a cartoon as a video or turn a scene into a GIF.
