About this AppleWorks viewer ClarisWorks, renamed AppleWorks in 1998, was the program that came with every Mac for over a decade: letters, school reports, budgets, address lists, drawings and paintings, all saved as .cwk files or as files with no extension at all. Apple stopped selling it in 2007, and Pages and Numbers stopped opening its files in 2013, so old .cwk files on a backup disk are now hard to open on any computer.
This page reads them with libmwaw, the open-source reader LibreOffice uses for old Mac files, compiled to run in your browser. A word processing file is shown as a document, with its fonts, styles, tables and pictures, and can be saved as a Word file; a spreadsheet or database is shown as a grid and saved as Excel or CSV; a drawing or painting is shown as a picture and saved as PDF, PNG or SVG. The file is never uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Open ClarisWorks 1 to 5 and AppleWorks 5 and 6 files, made on a Mac or on Windows Read word processing documents, with their formatting, tables and pictures, and save them as Word (.docx), PDF, HTML or plain text See spreadsheets and databases as a grid, with formulas, and save them as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV See drawings and paintings, and save them as PDF, PNG or SVG Open files from Microsoft Works for Mac, GreatWorks, BeagleWorks and WordPerfect Works the same way Open files with no extension, and BinHex (.hqx) copies of them How to open a CWK file without AppleWorks Drop the .cwk file onto the page, or click to choose it. Old Mac files often have no extension: choose them all the same. Read it on the page. Save it as Word, Excel, PDF or PNG, depending on what kind of file it is. Questions
Why will Pages or Numbers not open my AppleWorks file? Pages and Numbers opened AppleWorks 6 files until 2013, then dropped them; no current Apple program opens ClarisWorks or AppleWorks files. This page reads every version, from ClarisWorks 1 to AppleWorks 6, and saves them in formats Pages, Numbers, Word and Excel all open.
How do I convert a CWK file to Word? Open it here and choose Save as Word (.docx). The text keeps its fonts, sizes, bold and italic, paragraph alignment, tables and pictures. Fonts from the old Mac that your computer lacks are replaced by similar ones.
Can I open an AppleWorks spreadsheet in Excel? Yes: open it here and choose Save as Excel (.xlsx). Values, formulas and column widths come across; a database file is saved as a spreadsheet with one row per record.
My file has no .cwk extension. Will it open? Yes. Mac files before OS X kept their type outside the name, so many have no extension at all; this page looks at what is inside the file, not its name. Copies made on Windows or Linux may also have lost the part of the file that held its icon and pictures, in which case the text still opens.
Does it open Apple II AppleWorks files? No. AppleWorks for the Apple II (1984 to 1993) was a different program with its own formats (.awp, .asp, .adb), unrelated to the Mac and Windows AppleWorks this page reads.
Is my AppleWorks file uploaded anywhere? No. It is read and shown in your browser by a copy of the reader served from this site. For MacWrite, Word for Mac and other old Mac word processors, see the MacWrite Viewer ; for Microsoft Works for Windows, the Works Viewer .
