How do I open a WPD file without WordPerfect?

Here: drop it on the box above and it opens in the browser, on Windows, a Mac, a Chromebook or a phone, with nothing to install. To keep working on it, save it as a Word document, which every word processor opens.

Will the Word file look exactly like the WordPerfect one?

Close, but not always exact. Text, fonts, bold and italics, alignment, lists, tables, headers, footers and footnotes come across. WordPerfect's own features without a match in Word, such as some codes, columns and embedded WordPerfect graphics, may be simplified or left out. Check documents that matter, such as legal ones, against the original.

Can it open old WordPerfect for DOS files?

Yes: WordPerfect 5.0 and 5.1 for DOS, the most common old ones, and the earlier 4.2. DOS files are often named .wp, .wp5 or .w51 rather than .wpd; they open the same way.

Is my WordPerfect document uploaded?

No. The file is read by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. That matters for the legal and personal documents WordPerfect files often are.

About the WordPerfect viewer

WordPerfect was the word processor of the 1980s and early 1990s, and it is still used by many law firms, courts and government offices. Decades of letters, contracts, theses and reports sit in .wpd, .wp and .wp5 files. Word opens only some of them, often badly, and Google Docs, Pages and phones do not open them at all.

This page reads them with libwpd, the WordPerfect reader LibreOffice uses, and shows the document with its formatting: fonts, bold and italics, alignment, indents, lists, tables, headers, footers and footnotes. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
