Free iPhone backup viewer Open an iPhone backup made by iTunes or Finder - encrypted or not - and read the messages and WhatsApp chats, see the photos, notes, contacts, calls, calendar and more, and save them, without installing anything. Nothing is uploaded.
Where is my iPhone backup?
Windows, iTunes from the Microsoft Store or Apple Devices C:\Users\(your name)\Apple\MobileSync\Backup
Windows, iTunes downloaded from Apple C:\Users\(your name)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup - type %appdata% into the File Explorer address bar to get there.
Mac In Finder, select the iPhone in the sidebar, choose Manage Backups, right-click the backup and choose Show in Finder. macOS protects that folder, so if the browser cannot open it, copy the backup folder to your Desktop and choose the copy. Each backup is a folder named with a long code (the phone's identifier) holding thousands of files and Manifest.db. Choose that folder, or the Backup folder above it to pick between several.
Next step About this iPhone backup viewer When an iPhone is backed up to a computer with iTunes, Finder or Apple Devices, everything goes into one folder of thousands of files with meaningless names. The messages, WhatsApp chats, photos, notes and contacts are all in there, but nothing on the computer can show them: the usual way in is a paid program such as iMazing or iPhone Backup Extractor that lets you look for free and charges to export. People need it when a phone is lost, broken, sold or reset, or to keep a conversation, a note or a photo that is no longer on the phone.
This page reads the backup folder in your browser. It finds the backup's index, decrypts it if the backup is encrypted (with the backup password, checked here), and opens the phone's own databases: Messages, WhatsApp, Contacts, call history, Notes, Voice Memos, Calendar and Safari, and the camera roll. Read conversations with their photos and voice notes, print or save them, open locked notes with their password, save photos, recordings and notes, export contacts as vCard and the calendar as .ics, or save any file from the backup. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and once you have used it, it keeps working offline.

How do I get messages off an iPhone backup? Open the backup here and choose the Messages tab. Each conversation shows with its photos and the time of every message; Print or PDF saves it as a PDF (pick "Save as PDF" in the print dialog), Text saves a plain transcript, and "All messages as CSV" puts every conversation in one spreadsheet. Attachments can be saved one by one.
I forgot the backup password. Can it still be opened? No - the password is the key that decrypts the backup, and Apple slows each try down on purpose, so guessing is impractical. On the phone itself (if you still have it) you can reset the backup password under Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings, then make a new backup.
Why are my photos or messages missing? With iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud turned on, the iPhone leaves photos and messages out of computer backups, because they are already in iCloud. Call history, Health data and saved passwords are only included in encrypted backups on recent iOS versions.
Is my backup uploaded? No. The backup is read where it is, by your browser, and the password never leaves this page. That matters more here than anywhere: a backup holds a whole phone. How do I see WhatsApp messages from an iPhone backup? Open the backup here and choose the WhatsApp tab (WhatsApp Business has its own). Chats show with their photos, videos, voice notes and documents, and save as PDF, text or CSV. WhatsApp's own iCloud backup is separate and is not part of an iTunes or Finder backup; a chat exported from WhatsApp itself opens in the WhatsApp Viewer .
Can it open locked notes? Yes, with the Notes password: type it in the Notes tab and every note locked with it opens. Notes locked with the iPhone's passcode instead (an option since iOS 16) keep their key on the phone, so they cannot be opened from a backup.
