Why does my GoPro split videos?

GoPro keeps every file under 4 GB, the limit of the FAT32 cards cameras have long used, so any computer can read the card. The camera starts a new chapter whenever a file nears that size, without missing a frame, so joining the parts gives back the whole recording.

Does joining keep the GPS and telemetry?

Yes. Every track in the files is joined: picture, sound, timecode, and the GPMF telemetry track that holds GPS position, speed, altitude, accelerometer and gyroscope readings. Tools that re-encode, and many that copy, keep only the picture and sound.

One of the parts will not play. Can it still be joined?

Usually the last part, when the battery died or the card filled. Repair it first in Video Repair, using one of the other parts as the working video, then add the repaired file here with the rest.

It says the parts were recorded with different settings. What now?

Copying only works for parts of one recording, made with the same resolution, frame rate and codec. To join clips that differ, use the Video Cutter, which can re-encode them to match.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The parts are read and joined by your browser on your own computer, which matters for files of many gigabytes as much as for privacy.

About joining GoPro chapters

A GoPro records to a memory card formatted the old FAT32 way, which cannot hold a file over 4 GB. So a long recording is saved as chapters: GX010123.MP4, then GX020123.MP4, GX030123.MP4 and so on, each about 4 GB: a few minutes of 4K at a high bit rate, longer at lower settings. On older GoPros the first is GOPR0123.MP4 and the next GP010123.MP4. The parts follow on from each other exactly, but players and editors treat them as separate videos.

This page joins them back into one file by copying, not re-encoding: the picture and sound are untouched, so it takes seconds and loses no quality. Unlike most joining tools, it keeps every track a GoPro records, including the GPS, speed and motion sensor data (GPMF telemetry) that GoPro Quik, Telemetry Extractor and dashboard overlays read, and the timecode. Copy every part of the recording off the card: the files share the last four digits, such as GX010123, GX020123 and GX030123.
