Why is the stabilized video zoomed in?

To hold the picture steady, each frame is moved against the shake, which uncovers its edges. Zooming in a little hides them. The stronger the shake and the smoothing, the more zoom it takes; choose "No zoom" to keep the whole picture, with the edges filled from earlier frames, or "only where needed" to zoom just during the shakiest parts.

Can it fix any shaky video?

It fixes shake that moves the whole picture: wobbling hands, footsteps, wind. It cannot undo motion blur - a frame that was smeared when it was shot stays smeared, only steadier - and the jelly-like wobble of a fast-moving phone camera (rolling shutter) is reduced but not removed.

How long does stabilizing take?

Measuring the shake takes about as long as the video plays, often less; making the video takes about as long again on a typical laptop, and longer on an older one. Nothing is uploaded, so a long video costs time rather than an upload or a size limit.

Is my video uploaded to stabilize it?

No. The stabilizer is downloaded to your browser, and the video is decoded, measured, steadied and encoded on your computer. Nothing is sent to a server.

About this video stabilizer

Phone videos shot while walking, action-camera clips and drone footage in wind often come out too shaky to watch. Free online stabilizers usually want the video uploaded, cap its length or put a watermark on it. This one runs on your computer. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

It uses vid.stab, the stabilizer behind FFmpeg's vidstabdetect and vidstabtransform filters, published under the LGPL. The browser decodes each frame and vid.stab measures how the picture moved from the last one; it then works out the smoothest camera path that follows the movement you meant - a pan, a walk - without the shake, and every frame is shifted, turned and zoomed onto that path. The browser encodes the result as an MP4 and keeps the sound.

What you can do

Smooth out handheld shake, lightly or as smooth as a gimbal
Hold the camera completely still for a shot that should not move
Watch the original and the steadied video side by side before making it
Choose how the moving edges are hidden: zoom in, zoom only where needed, or no zoom
Keep the sound; no length limit and no watermark

How to stabilize a video

Drop the video onto the page and press Measure the shake.
Press Play to compare the original and the steadied video, and pick the smoothing and edges you like.
Press Make the video. The MP4 downloads when it is done.
