Question 1

How do I get my notebook out of OneNote into Obsidian or Notion?

Accepted Answer

In OneNote for Windows, File › Export saves a section as a .one file or a notebook as a .onepkg. Open it here and choose Markdown zip: each page becomes a Markdown file in a folder per section, with its pictures beside it and an index of every page. Obsidian opens the folder as a vault; Notion and Joplin import Markdown.

Question 2

I downloaded my notebook from OneDrive and got a folder of files. Will that open?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Drop the whole folder, or use Choose the notebook folder, and every section opens, in its section groups, from the notebook's .onetoc2 table of contents.

Question 3

Can it open OneNote 2007 files?

Accepted Answer

No. OneNote 2007 used an older format the reader does not handle; OneNote 2010 or later can convert those sections, which then open here.

Question 4

Does a page look the same as in OneNote?

Accepted Answer

Close to it: notes stay where they were placed on the page, with their fonts, colours and pictures. A font you do not have is replaced by a similar one, and some things OneNote draws itself - audio recordings, printouts it renders from the attached file, and a few kinds of embedded objects - appear as an attachment to save instead.

Question 5

Are my OneNote notes uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. It is read in your browser by a copy of the reader served from this site, so private notes stay on your computer.
