What happens to the parts Markdown cannot express?

They are flattened to their text. Markdown has no merged cells, layout or styling, so layout wrappers disappear and leave their words behind, and a table with merged cells still becomes a plain pipe table: a merged cell appears once, and the rows beside it are padded with empty cells, so columns can shift. Check a table like that by hand. No HTML is kept in the output.

Can I paste a whole web page?

Yes, and you will get its navigation and footer as well, since they are part of the page. Copying just the region you want first gives a much cleaner result.

Which bullet and heading styles should I pick?

Whatever the destination already uses. Most Markdown tooling accepts all of them, so the choice is about matching an existing file rather than correctness.

Is the page I paste sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser with Turndown, so a page from an internal wiki or an intranet stays where it is.

Does it keep links and images?

Yes. Links become Markdown links and images become image references, pointing at the same URLs they did in the HTML.

Does it strip anything dangerous out of the page?

Scripts and event handlers do not survive the conversion - Turndown drops them, which I checked with a page carrying both. One thing does come through: a link whose target is javascript: rather than a URL. It is kept because the conversion is meant to be faithful to the page, but there is no honest use for one in a document, so delete it before you publish the Markdown anywhere.

Copying from a browser puts real HTML on the clipboard, so pasting a chunk of a web page here works directly — no need to view source. Scripts and styles are stripped.

About this HTML to Markdown converter

Paste HTML — or open an .html file — and get Markdown out, with headings, lists, links, tables and code blocks preserved and the wrapper markup dropped.

Useful for moving a page into a README, a wiki or notes without hand-stripping the tags. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

Set the style options: ATX or underlined headings, which bullet marker to use, fenced or indented code blocks, and which characters mark bold and italic.
The Markdown appears alongside as you go.
Copy it, or download a .md file.
