Question 1

Can it open Kindle books I bought from Amazon?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. Books bought from the Kindle Store are protected with DRM, which ties them to your Kindle devices and apps; this page says so when it meets one. Books without DRM, such as those from Project Gutenberg, many independent authors and publishers, or ones you made yourself, open here.

Question 2

What is the difference between MOBI and AZW3?

Accepted Answer

MOBI is the original Kindle format, with simple formatting. AZW3, also called KF8, is its successor, built on modern HTML and CSS, so it keeps more of a book's layout and fonts. Many files contain both versions; this page opens the newer one when it is there.

Question 3

Does the MOBI reader remember my place in the book?

Accepted Answer

No. Nothing about the book is stored, so reopening it starts at the beginning; the contents list takes you back to your chapter.

Question 4

Is my Kindle book uploaded anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. The book is read by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing in it is fetched from or sent to the web.
