Why are the files called "asset" when I unzip a package?

A .unitypackage stores each file in a folder named by Unity's ID for it, with the file itself called "asset" and its real path in a small file beside it called "pathname". Archive tools show that raw layout; this page reads the pathname files and gives every asset its proper name and folder.

Can I use the files without Unity?

The files are what the package holds, unchanged: FBX and OBJ models open in Blender, PNG and PSD textures in any image editor, WAV and OGG sounds anywhere. Unity-only files such as materials, prefabs and scenes are Unity's own text formats and need Unity to be useful.

Is anything installed or run?

No. The package is only unpacked and listed. Scripts inside it are files like any other here; nothing in the package is run.

Is my package uploaded?

No. It is unpacked by this browser tab on your own device, which matters for paid assets whose licence does not allow passing them on.

Free UNITYPACKAGE extractor: open a Unity package without Unity

See every file in a .unitypackage by its real name and folder, with Unity's thumbnails, and save one file or all of them as a ZIP laid out as in the project - without installing Unity. The file is opened in your browser and is not uploaded.

About the UNITYPACKAGE extractor

A .unitypackage is how Unity assets travel: models, textures, sounds, scripts and shaders bought on the Asset Store, shared by an avatar creator or sent by a teammate. Unity imports it in a click, but without Unity installed - or when you only want one texture or model out of it - there is no simple way in. Unpacked with an ordinary archive tool it is no help either: every file sits in a folder named by a long random ID, and is called just "asset".

This page reads the package and puts the names back: each file under its real name, in the folder it belongs to in the project, with the thumbnail Unity saved where there is one. Save any file on its own, or everything as a ZIP in its proper folders, ready to use in Blender, an image editor or another engine. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
