The model is made for people a few metres from the camera at most, so it finds them reliably there and keeps their hair and shoulders. It does not cut out objects, animals or people far away, and with several people it may keep some and drop others.

How long does removing the background take?

About as long as the video plays, or quicker, on a computer with a graphics card; slower on an older laptop or a phone. A preview of one frame is instant, so the settings can be got right before the whole video is made.

Can I get a video with a transparent background?

Yes: choose None. The video is saved as a WebM with an alpha channel (VP9), which editors such as DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, CapCut and browsers themselves show with the background see-through. For software that does not read transparency, the green screen option gives a background that any editor can key out.

Does the video leave my computer?

No. The model is downloaded to your browser once, and the video is decoded, cut out and encoded on your computer. Nothing is sent to a server.

About this video background remover

Online background removers for video mostly limit you to a few seconds, put a watermark on the result, or need an account - and all of them want the video uploaded first. This one works on your computer, on videos of any length. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

It finds the person in every frame with MediaPipe's selfie segmentation model, made by Google for video calls and published under the Apache 2.0 licence, running on your graphics card where the browser allows. The edge is softened and steadied from frame to frame, and the person is put over the background you choose. The video is made in your browser as an MP4 - or, with no background, as a WebM with real transparency for video editors.
