Can I just rename .otf to .ttf?

No. Most .otf files hold PostScript (CFF) outlines, and a program that wants a .ttf expects TrueType outlines inside; renaming changes neither, so the font is rejected or shows nothing. Converting here redraws the outlines as TrueType curves. The only thing not carried over is hinting, the low-level instructions some fonts use at small sizes on screen.

How do I install a WOFF2 font?

Computers do not install WOFF or WOFF2 files: they are compressed copies for websites. Convert to TTF (or OTF) here, then double-click the result and choose Install, or right-click it and choose Install on Windows.

Which format should I use on a website?

WOFF2. Every browser in use supports it and it is usually 30 to 50 percent smaller than TTF. WOFF is only for browsers from before 2016; you no longer need TTF or EOT in a @font-face rule.

Is converting a font allowed?

That depends on the font's licence, not on the file format. Open-source fonts such as those under the SIL Open Font License can be converted freely. For a commercial font, check its licence before converting or putting it on a website; the Font Inspector shows the licence and embedding permissions stored in the file.

Are my fonts uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser, so a commercial or unreleased typeface never leaves your computer.

About this font converter

Fonts come in four common files. TTF and OTF are desktop fonts you install on Windows, a Mac or Linux and use in Word, Photoshop or Canva; WOFF and WOFF2 are the same fonts packed for websites, smaller but impossible to install. Designers need to go between them all the time: a web font they want to use in a document, a desktop font to put on a website, or an .otf that an app, a cutting machine or an embroidery program refuses until it is a .ttf.

This page converts between all four. WOFF2 is decoded and encoded with Google's own woff2 library, compiled to run in your browser. OTF to TTF is a real conversion, not a rename: the PostScript (CFF) curves inside most .otf files are redrawn as TrueType curves to within one font unit, and the kerning, ligatures and every other table come across unchanged. Each converted font is loaded back into the browser for a preview, which also shows that it is a working font. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline. To look inside a font - its glyphs, metrics and licence - use the Font Inspector.
