IFC (Industry Foundation Classes, .ifc) is the open file format architects, engineers and builders use to share building information models. Revit, ArchiCAD, Tekla, Allplan, Vectorworks and BricsCAD all export it, and many tenders and public projects require it. But opening one usually means installing a BIM program or a vendor's viewer, which is a lot to ask of a client, a site manager or a facilities team who only need to look.
This page reads the model with web-ifc, an open-source IFC engine compiled to run in your browser, and draws the whole building in 3D. The model is listed by storey and by kind of element (walls, doors, windows, slabs and so on), so you can look at one floor or hide the furniture. Cut through the building at any height to see a floor plan in 3D, and click any element to read its properties, quantities and materials. The file is read on your computer and never uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline. For CAD parts in STEP or IGES, use the STEP Viewer; for SketchUp models, the SketchUp Viewer.
- What is an IFC file?
- A building information model in the open IFC standard from buildingSMART. Besides the 3D shapes, it stores what each part is (a wall, a door, a beam), where it sits in the building (site, building, storey, room), and data such as materials, fire ratings, areas and volumes. It is the usual way to pass a model between different BIM programs.
- How do I see a single floor of the building?
- In the Storeys list, click "only" beside the floor. To look down into it like a plan, also move the Section cut slider to just below the floor above, or hide the roof and slabs in the Elements list.
- Where are the rooms?
- Rooms in IFC are spaces: invisible boxes of air that would cover everything else, so they start hidden. Tick Space in the Elements list to show them, then click one to see its name, number and area.
- Can I convert IFC to SketchUp, Blender or another 3D format?
- Yes: Save GLB keeps the colours and opens in Blender, SketchUp (with its glTF importer), Unity, Unreal and Windows 3D Viewer. Save OBJ is plain geometry for older programs. Only the elements shown are saved (the whole element, even where the section cut hides part of it); the IFC properties are not carried over, since those formats cannot hold them.
- Can I open a Revit .rvt file here?
- No. Revit's own files are a closed format. In Revit, use File, Export, IFC, and open the .ifc it makes here. ArchiCAD (File, Save As, IFC), Tekla and most other BIM programs export IFC the same way.
- Is my building model uploaded?
- No. The IFC reader is downloaded to your browser and the model is read there, so plans for an unbuilt project, a secure site or a client's home never leave your computer.
