What is the difference between FreeMind and Freeplane files?

Both are .mm files in the same XML format; Freeplane started as a fork of FreeMind and adds styles, formulas and more. This page reads both and says which program wrote the file.

Can I open an .mm file on an iPad or Android phone?

Yes, here, in the browser. FreeMind and Freeplane need Java on a desktop computer, but this page does not.

Is an .mm file always a mind map?

Almost always, but .mm is also used by a few other programs. The page checks for the mind map inside and says so if it is something else.

Is my FreeMind or Freeplane map uploaded?

No. The .mm file is read by this browser tab on your own device; nothing is sent anywhere.

About the FreeMind and Freeplane viewer

FreeMind and its successor Freeplane are free, open-source mind-mapping programs, popular in education and with people who outline books, courses and research in them; both save maps as .mm files. They run on Java on Windows, Mac and Linux, but not on phones, tablets or Chromebooks, and not on a work computer that will not install Java, so a map shared with someone without them cannot be opened.

This page reads .mm files from both programs, draws them as a map you can move around and fold, and lists every node with its notes and links. Rich text in nodes and notes is read as its words. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and once you have used it, it keeps working offline.
