Can I open an XMind file without paying for XMind?

To read it, yes: here, on any device. XMind's own free version also opens files but limits what you can do with them. To edit a map you need XMind or another mind-mapping program.

Does it open files from XMind 8, XMind Zen and XMind 2026?

Yes. Newer XMind writes the map as JSON and older versions as XML, and this page reads both, so a map from 2010 and one from this year open the same way.

Can I turn an XMind map into a document or a list?

Copy outline puts the whole map on your clipboard as an indented list, one topic per line, which pastes into a document, an email, or an outliner. The Outline view shows the notes too.

Is my mind map uploaded?

No. The .xmind file is read by this browser tab on your own device, and the pictures are made here; nothing is sent anywhere.

About the XMind viewer

XMind is one of the most used mind-mapping programs, for planning, brainstorming, study notes and project outlines, and its maps are saved as .xmind files. To open one you need XMind installed, and its newer versions keep much of what they do behind a subscription. Someone sent a map without the program, a student whose school licence ran out, or anyone opening an old map on a phone or a Chromebook is left with a file nothing else reads.

This page reads .xmind files from every version: XMind 2020 and later (including XMind 2026, which keeps the map as JSON inside the file) and XMind 8 and earlier (which keep it as XML). It draws each sheet as a map you can move around and fold, and lists it as an outline with every topic's notes and links. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and once you have used it, it keeps working offline.

What you can do

See every sheet of an .xmind file as a mind map, with its central topic, branches and floating topics
Move around and zoom, fold and unfold branches, and click a topic to read its note and link
Read the whole map as an outline, notes included, or copy it as an indented list
Save the map as a PNG picture or an SVG drawing that stays sharp at any size

Styles, colours, pictures, icons, relationship lines and summaries are not drawn: the map shows the topics and how they connect, in this page's own simple style.
