What is the difference between EMF and WMF?

WMF is the original 16-bit format from Windows 3.0; EMF replaced it with Windows 95, adding precise coordinates, Bézier curves, transforms and better text. EMF+ is a later addition that stores GDI+ drawing commands; files from Office carry both versions, and the EMF one is drawn here.

Will the SVG be editable?

Yes. Shapes become SVG paths and text stays text, so it can be changed in a vector editor. Bitmaps inside the metafile come out as embedded images. Text uses the font named in the file, or a similar one when your computer does not have it.

Why does something look different from Windows?

A few rarely used features have no SVG equivalent - copies of bitmaps through masks, some ways of combining clipping regions, and text stored as font glyph numbers. A note under the picture says when a file uses one of them.

Are my files uploaded?

No. They are read and converted in your browser.

About EMF and WMF files

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) and WMF (Windows Metafile) are Windows' own vector picture formats: a recording of the drawing commands that made a picture - lines, shapes, text and embedded bitmaps - rather than a grid of pixels. They turn up as clip art from old Office and CorelDRAW collections, as charts and diagrams pasted out of Excel and Visio, as logos sent by printers and sign makers, and inside Word and PowerPoint files. Browsers, Macs and phones cannot open them.

This page reads the drawing records itself and draws them as SVG, so the picture stays sharp at any size, then saves it as SVG for editing in Inkscape, Illustrator or Figma, as PNG at up to eight times its size, or as PDF. .emz and .wmz files - the compressed versions Office keeps inside documents - are unpacked first. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

What you can do

Open .emf, .wmf, .emz and .wmz files, several at once
Convert EMF and WMF to SVG, keeping lines, shapes and text as vectors
Convert EMF and WMF to PNG at 1, 2, 4 or 8 times the picture's size
Convert EMF and WMF to PDF, one file per picture or all in one PDF
Save a whole folder of clip art as a ZIP of PNGs or SVGs
View at actual size or on a dark background

How to convert EMF to PNG or SVG

Drop one or more .emf or .wmf files onto this page.
Check the picture, choosing actual size or a dark background if it helps.
Press Save SVG, Save PNG (choosing the size) or Save PDF - or save them all at once.
