Will the PDF look exactly like the document in Word?

Very close for most documents: text, headings, lists, tables, pictures, headers and footers come out as Word shows them. Pages break where Word last broke them when it saved the file. What can differ is a font the document uses that this computer does not have, which is replaced by a similar one, and advanced layout such as text boxes wrapped around pictures or complex columns.

Why does it use the print dialog?

The browser's own PDF printer keeps the text as text, with the fonts embedded, so the PDF is small, sharp at any zoom and searchable. Choose "Save as PDF" (Chrome, Edge, Brave) or "Microsoft Print to PDF" (Windows) as the printer; on a Mac, use the PDF button in the dialog.

Can it convert an old .doc file?

Not to a laid-out PDF: old Word 97-2003 .doc files are a different format. Open one in the Doc Viewer to read and copy its text, or save it as .docx in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs first.

Is the Word file sent anywhere to make the PDF?

No. The document is read and laid out by your browser and printed to PDF on your computer; nothing is sent anywhere. It cannot reach the internet either: pictures that point outside the file are not loaded.

About this Word to PDF converter

Sending a document as a PDF means it looks the same for everyone and cannot be changed by accident. Without Word, or on a phone, Chromebook or a computer where Word is not installed, the usual way is a website that wants the document uploaded. This page lays the document out in your browser, page by page, and saves it as a PDF from there. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

The layout comes from docx-preview, an open-source Word renderer: the page size and margins, headers and footers, fonts, paragraph and character formatting, lists, tables, pictures and footnotes, broken into pages where Word broke them. The PDF is made by the browser's own PDF printer, so the words stay as text - searchable and copyable - rather than becoming a picture of the page.
