What kind of images convert best?

Images with clear shapes and flat colours: logos, icons, clip art, cartoons, signatures and scanned drawings. A photo can be traced too, but the result is an artistic, poster-like picture made of coloured shapes, not a copy of the photo. The larger and sharper the original, the better the outlines.

Why does my SVG have so many shapes?

Every patch of a slightly different colour becomes a shape, so soft shading, JPEG blockiness and noise multiply them. Lower the number of colours, raise the speck size, or use Logo, which keeps to 16 colours. Fewer shapes means a smaller file that cuts and edits more easily.

Can I use the SVG with a Cricut or Silhouette cutter?

Yes. Cutting software imports SVG; for a single-colour cut, use Line art or set the colours to 2, and remove the background so only the design is cut.

Is this real vectorising, or a PNG wrapped in an SVG?

Real vectorising. Some converters put the original pixels inside an SVG file, which is still blurry when enlarged. Here every shape is traced and written as a path, which you can see by the shape count under the picture and by opening the SVG in Inkscape or Illustrator.

Does the image leave my computer?

No. It is traced by your browser on your computer, so a client's logo or an unreleased design stays private.

About converting images to SVG

A PNG or JPG is a grid of pixels: enlarge it and it goes blurry and blocky. An SVG describes shapes instead, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size, from a favicon to a billboard, and it is what cutting machines, laser engravers, embroidery software and print shops ask for. This tool traces the shapes in your image and writes them as an SVG. It uses VTracer, an open-source tracer that works in full colour, running on your computer in the page.

Pick the kind of image you have and it sets sensible options; then adjust the number of colours, how small a speck to ignore, and whether outlines are smooth curves or straight lines, and the SVG is traced again as you change them. Slide across the picture to compare the SVG with the original. For a logo, remove the background to get a transparent SVG. The image is never uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
