Will the text in the PDF be searchable?

Yes. An XPS document stores its text as text, in fonts embedded in the file, and the PDF keeps it that way: it can be searched, selected and copied, in any language. Only text that was a picture in the XPS, such as a scanned page, stays a picture.

What is the difference between .xps and .oxps?

.oxps is OpenXPS, the version of XPS standardised as ECMA-388, which Windows 8 and later write by default. The two differ in small details of how the file is put together, and this page reads both.

Is anything lost in the conversion?

Pages look the same. Pictures stored as JPEG XR (HD Photo), which some XPS documents use, show as grey boxes, since no browser can decode that format. Links, a digital signature and the document's outline are not carried over.

I printed to XPS by mistake. Can I get a PDF instead next time?

Yes. Windows 10 and 11 include a printer called Microsoft Print to PDF: choose it instead of Microsoft XPS Document Writer in the print dialog, and the file comes out as a PDF.

Is my XPS document uploaded?

No. The document is read and converted by this browser tab, with this site's own XPS reader; nothing is sent anywhere.

About the XPS to PDF converter

XPS was Microsoft's answer to PDF. Every copy of Windows since Vista has a printer called Microsoft XPS Document Writer, and anything printed to it, on purpose or by picking the wrong printer, becomes an .xps file; since Windows 8 it writes the standardised form, OpenXPS (.oxps). The trouble comes when the file has to be opened anywhere else. Macs, phones and tablets have nothing that reads it, the XPS Viewer stopped being installed with Windows in 2018, and most online converters upload the document and turn each page into a picture.

This page reads the XPS document itself and writes a real PDF: shapes, gradients and pictures stay as they were drawn, and the text is set in the fonts embedded in the document, so it stays sharp at any zoom and can be searched, selected and copied. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
