Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, as any JPG does, but at the default quality of 92 the difference is invisible in normal viewing. Choose 100 for the most faithful JPG, or PNG for a lossless copy - which will be several times the size of the HEIC.

Will the converted photos keep the date they were taken?

Yes. The date, camera model, lens and exposure settings are copied into the JPG or PNG, so a photo library sorts them into the right place. The orientation is fixed in the pixels themselves, so a portrait photo stays upright everywhere.

Why do my iPhone photos save as HEIC?

Accepted Answer

Because the camera is set to High Efficiency, which stores the same picture in about half the space. To have new photos taken as JPG instead, go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible; photos already taken stay as they are.

Is there a limit on how many photos I can convert?

Accepted Answer

No. The photos are converted by your own browser, one after another, so there is no upload and no daily quota. A few hundred at once is fine on a computer; on a phone, smaller batches are kinder to its memory.
