Converts between units of length, mass, temperature, area, volume and speed, and between number bases — binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal — in the same place.
Conversions update as you type, with no button to press. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
- Why is temperature handled differently from the rest?
- Because it has offsets, not just ratios - zero Celsius is not zero Fahrenheit. Multiplying by a conversion factor, which works for every other category here, gives the wrong answer for temperature, so it is converted properly.
- Does the data category use 1000 or 1024?
- Both, listed separately. Kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes (kB, MB, GB, TB) go up in thousands, as disk makers count; kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes and tebibytes (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) go up in 1024s, which is what Windows shows while calling them KB, MB and GB. That is why a 500 GB disk shows as about 465 GB on a PC.
- Can it convert between number bases?
- Yes. The base converter moves a value between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal, which is the other half of what people come here for.
- Is it accurate enough for engineering work?
- Results are shown to 10 significant figures, which is ample for everyday use; very large or very small results (16 or more digits before the decimal point, or below 0.0001) switch to exponent form with up to 7. For anything with a tolerance attached, verify against a reference.
- Does it need an internet connection?
- Only to load the page. After that the conversions are arithmetic in your browser and work offline.
