Why does my icon have several sizes?

So it looks sharp everywhere. A 16-pixel image redrawn by hand looks crisper in a list than a 256-pixel one shrunk down, so icon designers include each size. Pick the largest for a high-resolution PNG.

Can I get the icon out of a program (.exe)?

Not on this page: icons inside programs are stored as resources, not as .ico files. Tools such as Resource Hacker on Windows can save them as .ico files, which then open here.

Some sizes in my .icns are not shown. Why?

Some .icns files store their big sizes as JPEG 2000, which browsers cannot draw. The page lists those sizes and shows the rest. On a Mac, Preview can export them.

Is the icon uploaded?

About icon files

Windows and the Mac draw icons at many sizes - 16 pixels in a list, 32 on a taskbar, 256 or 1024 in a big view - so an icon file is really a bundle of images. Windows uses .ico for program and website icons (favicon.ico is one), .cur for mouse pointers and .ani for animated ones; the Mac uses .icns. Most image viewers show only one of the sizes, if they open the file at all, and Windows cannot open an .icns.

This page reads every image in the file: PNG and BMP images of every colour depth in .ico and .cur files, with their transparency; each frame of an animated .ani cursor; and in an .icns, the PNG sizes up to 1024 pixels, the Retina (@2x) ones and the old packed images with their masks. Each is shown on a checkerboard, so see-through parts look see-through, and saved as an exact PNG. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
