Why won't my browser open JXL files?

Google removed its early JPEG XL support from Chrome in 2023, so many copies of Chrome and Edge (built on it), and Firefox, do not show it. Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad opens them. Anywhere else, convert to JPG or PNG here.

Can I get the original JPEG back from a JXL?

If the JPEG XL was made from a JPEG with lossless recompression, yes, byte for byte, with libjxl's djxl command-line tool; the details here say when a file is one of those. Saving as JPG on this page makes a new JPG from the pixels instead, which looks the same but is not the identical file.

Does it keep HDR and 16-bit JPEG XL pictures?

They are shown and saved at 8 bits a channel, which is what JPG and ordinary PNGs hold. Animated JPEG XL shows its first frame.

Is my JXL file uploaded?

No. The file is decoded by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

About the JXL viewer

JPEG XL is the newest JPEG: smaller files than JPG at the same quality, lossless compression, transparency and high bit depths, and the trick of repacking an existing JPEG about a fifth smaller with no loss. Apple's devices open it, and Adobe's apps and a growing list of editors write it. But Windows' Photos app, Android and many browsers do not open it, so .jxl files often arrive where nothing shows them.

This page decodes them with libjxl, the reference JPEG XL decoder, compiled to run in the page. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
