How do I get the photos and images out of an XD file?

Open the file here. Every image placed in the design is listed below the preview at its own size, with a button to save it unchanged, as the JPEG, PNG or GIF it was when it was placed.

Why can't this open my XD cloud document?

XD can save a design as a cloud document, kept in Adobe's Creative Cloud rather than as a file on your computer. There is no .xd file to open until it is saved as one: in XD, File then Save As, choosing your computer. Someone who still has XD can do that and send you the file.

Can I edit an XD design without Adobe XD?

Not here: this page shows what is in the file. To work on a design again, it has to be rebuilt in another app, and this page helps with that by listing the artboards, layers and fonts and giving back the images.

Is my XD file uploaded?

No. The file is read by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

About the Adobe XD viewer

Adobe XD was Adobe's app for designing websites and apps, and .xd is its file. Adobe stopped developing XD in 2023 and no longer sells it on its own, so many people now hold .xd files they cannot open: a design handed over by a former agency, an old project from before a team moved to Figma, or files from a course. Without XD installed, nothing on a computer or phone shows what is in them.

An .xd file is a package of the design's parts. Inside it XD saves a preview picture, the list of artboards with every layer on them, and the photos and images placed in the design. This page reads all of those. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

What this viewer shows, and what it does not

The preview picture XD saved in the file
Every artboard, by name, with its layers: groups, shapes, text, images and components, with their opacity, blend modes and which are hidden
The document's title, artboard size, the fonts it uses and when it was created and last saved
The photos and images placed in the design, each at its own size, and each can be saved as it was placed

It does not draw the artboards themselves: they are XD's own vector drawings, which only XD renders. The preview, the layer list and the images are usually enough to see what a file is and to get its pictures back.
