An .mdp file is the working file of MediBang Paint and FireAlpaca, the free drawing apps many comic, manga and illustration artists start with, and of mdiapp+, the earlier app by the same makers that the format is named after. It keeps every layer, folder and blend mode so the drawing can be picked up again. Nothing else opens it: Windows Photos, Preview on a Mac, phones, image websites and editors such as Photoshop and GIMP see an unknown file. Someone sent an .mdp instead of a finished picture, or finding old drawings in a backup, has had to install one of the apps just to look.
This page reads the file's layers and puts them together into the full-size picture, with their folders, clipping, opacity and blend modes, and lists every layer with a switch to show or hide it. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline. Nothing is sent to a server, so unfinished commissions and private sketches stay on your device.
- How do I convert an MDP file to PNG or JPG?
- Open it here and press Save as PNG or Save as JPG. A PNG keeps any transparent background; a JPG has none, so transparent parts become white (or the canvas's paper colour). In MediBang Paint or FireAlpaca themselves, File then Export does the same.
- Will the picture look the same as in MediBang Paint or FireAlpaca?
- Layers and their opacity were checked against the thumbnails FireAlpaca saves in its own files, and match. Folders and clipped layers are put together the way the apps describe them, and blend modes use the standard formulas, so blended or clipped parts can differ by a shade. Not drawn: halftone screentone on 8-bit and 1-bit layers (shown as solid ink in the layer colour), layer effects such as watercolour edge, and masks set on a layer (drawn as ordinary layers). The page says when a file uses a blend mode it does not draw exactly, or a mask.
- Can I get the separate layers out of an MDP file?
- Yes. Press PNG beside any layer to save it on its own, or Save all layers (.zip) for every layer with pixels, numbered from the top, plus the whole picture. Each layer is saved at the full canvas size with transparency around it, so they stack back up in any editor that opens PNGs.
- Are MediBang Paint text layers shown?
- A text layer is drawn from the pixels the file stores for it, when it stores any; one with none is marked empty. Any words the file keeps with the layer are listed under its name as plain text. The text is not set again from its font, so it cannot be edited here.
- How large an MDP file or canvas can this open?
- Files up to 1 GB are read. The picture is drawn for canvases up to 16,384 pixels on a side and 150 million pixels in all, which covers almost every comic page and illustration; phones and tablets allow smaller canvases than computers. A bigger canvas still opens, with its layer list and the app's own thumbnail.
- My .mdp file is not a drawing. What else uses the extension?
- Old Microsoft Visual C++ (versions 4 to 6) saved project files ending in .mdp. They are not pictures, and this page says so when given one; the File Opener can tell what a file really is.
- Is my MDP file uploaded?
- No. The file is read and drawn by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere.
