Procreate is a drawing app for the iPad, and a .procreate file is its own working file: every layer, the canvas size, and often a time-lapse recording of the picture being drawn. Only Procreate opens it, and Procreate runs only on an iPad or iPhone, so a .procreate file copied to a Windows PC, a Mac or an Android tablet shows up as a blank icon that nothing will open. That happens to artists moving a backup to a computer, to clients sent the working file instead of an export, and to teachers collecting students' work.
This page reads the file the way Procreate does. It decodes every layer and lays them over each other with their opacity, blend modes, clipping masks and layer masks, so the picture you see is the full-size artwork, not the small thumbnail inside the file. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and once you have used it, it keeps working offline.
- Can I open a Procreate file on Windows?
- Yes, on this page, in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Procreate itself has no Windows or Android version, and Windows does not know the format, which is why the file shows a blank icon. On an iPad, the other way is to export from Procreate: Share, then PNG, JPEG or PSD.
- Will it look exactly as it does in Procreate?
- Very close. Procreate's blend modes, clipping masks and layer masks are applied, and on the test files the result matches Procreate's own preview of the artwork. Drawing guides and reference windows are not part of the picture, so they do not appear.
- Can I turn a .procreate file into a PSD for Photoshop?
- Not here: this page saves PNGs, of the whole picture and of each layer. Saving each layer gives you full-size, transparent images you can stack in Photoshop, GIMP or Krita. For a layered PSD in one step, export from Procreate on the iPad.
- Does the time-lapse play?
- When the artwork was recorded, yes. Procreate stores the recording in parts inside the file, and this page plays them one after another. Some files have none, because recording was turned off or the video was removed to save space.
- Does my Procreate artwork get uploaded?
- No. The file is read by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere. A large canvas with many layers takes a few seconds to draw, because the work is done by your own computer.
