How do I convert XCF to PNG or JPG?

Open the file here and save the picture as a PNG. For a JPG, the Image Toolkit converts the PNG in the browser too. In GIMP itself, File then Export As does the same.

Will the picture look the same as it does in GIMP?

It should, to within a shade. It was checked against GIMP 2.10's and GIMP 3's own flattened output, layer mode by layer mode, and matches to one step in 255. Three things are not drawn: GIMP 3's non-destructive filters (the layer is drawn without them), the four LCh blend modes and a few rare ones such as Dissolve (drawn as Normal). The page says when a file uses any of them. Colours are shown as standard sRGB, so a file with a different embedded colour profile can look a little off.

Why won't my computer open an XCF file?

Because .xcf is GIMP's working format, not a picture format. It is meant to be reopened in GIMP and exported to PNG or JPEG when finished, so Windows, Macs, phones and websites have no reason to read it. This page reads it without GIMP.

Can I save a single layer from an XCF file?

Not on this page yet. The layers are listed with their settings, and the picture is all of them together. GIMP, which is free from gimp.org, opens the layers themselves.

Is my GIMP file uploaded?

No. The file is read and drawn by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

About the XCF viewer

An .xcf file is GIMP's own working file. GIMP is the free image editor for Windows, Mac and Linux, and it saves every layer, group, mask and blend mode in this format so the work can be picked up again. Almost nothing else opens it: Windows Photos, Preview on a Mac, phones, image websites and most other editors see an unknown file. Someone sent an .xcf rather than an exported picture, or finding old ones in a backup, has had to install GIMP just to look.

Unlike most editors' files, an .xcf holds no finished copy of the picture, only its layers. So this page does what GIMP does when it opens one: it reads every layer and puts them together, with their groups, masks, opacity and blend modes, into the full-size picture. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
