How do I convert KRA to PNG or JPG?

Open the file here and save the picture as a PNG; it is the full-size image Krita stored in the file. To get a JPG from that, the Image Toolkit converts PNG to JPG in the browser too. In Krita itself, File then Export does the same.

Why do I only see a small picture?

Files saved by older versions of Krita hold only a preview of up to 256 pixels, not the full picture. The page says when that is the case. Krita is free on krita.org and opens these files at full size.

Can I see each layer on its own?

Not on this page. The layers are listed with their settings, but only the flattened picture Krita saved is shown. Krita opens the layers themselves.

Does it work for CMYK or 16-bit files?

Yes. Whatever the colour model and depth, Krita writes the stored picture as an ordinary PNG, so print artwork in CMYK and 16-bit or floating-point paintings show the same way. Colours are as Krita converted them for the screen, so a CMYK proof is only a guide to the printed colour.

Is my drawing uploaded?

No. The file is read by this browser tab on your own device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

About the KRA viewer

A .kra file is Krita's own working file. Krita is a free painting program for Windows, Mac and Linux, popular with illustrators, comic artists and concept artists, and it saves every layer, group, mask and filter layer in this format. Without Krita installed nothing opens it: Windows Photos, Preview on a Mac, phones and image websites all treat it as an unknown file. That is a problem when a client, a teacher or a print shop is sent the .kra rather than an exported picture.

Krita saves a flattened copy of the whole picture inside every .kra file, at full size, so other programs can show it. This page finds that picture, shows it, and lists the layers recorded alongside it. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and once you have used it, it keeps working offline.
