What is Discord's file size limit?

20 MB a file on a free account since August 2026 (10 MB from 2024 until then), 50 MB with Nitro Basic, and 500 MB with Nitro. In a server boosted to level 2 everyone can upload 50 MB, and at level 3 100 MB, but only in that server; the higher of your own limit and the server's applies.

Why does Discord say "Your files are too powerful"?

That is its message for a file over your upload limit. Compress the video here to a size under the limit, or trim it to a shorter part, and send the smaller copy.

Why won't my iPhone video play in Discord?

iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) inside a .mov file, which Discord often shows as a file to download rather than a video that plays in the chat. The MP4 made here uses H.264, which Discord plays inline on the desktop app, in browsers and on phones.

How long a video fits in 20 MB?

About a minute at good 720p quality, or around 30 seconds at full HD; a talking-head clip fits more than fast action, and a longer video still fits but looks softer. Trimming to the part that matters gives the sharpest result at a given size.

Is my video uploaded to compress it?

No. It is compressed by your browser on your own device, so a private clip goes from your computer to Discord and nowhere else.

About compressing videos for Discord

Discord refuses a file over the upload limit with "Your files are too powerful", and a phone records more than a minute of video well past it. Since August 2026 the limit on a free account is 20 MB a file (it was 10 MB before); Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB, and a server boosted to level 2 or 3 lets everyone in it send 50 or 100 MB there. Pick the limit that applies to you and this page shrinks the video to fit it, as an MP4 that Discord plays right in the chat.

It works out the bitrate the size allows over the video's length and a picture size that bitrate can carry, so a short clip stays sharp at full HD and a long one drops to 720p rather than turning to blocks; the result is checked against the size and made again a little smaller if it comes out over. The encoding uses your device's own video encoder, usually the graphics chip, so it takes seconds. There is no watermark, no account and no queue. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

What you can do

Compress a video under Discord's 20 MB free limit, the older 10 MB limit, or the 50, 100 and 500 MB limits of Nitro Basic, boosted servers and Nitro
Type any other size, for another app's limit
Trim it to the part that matters first, so the same size keeps more quality
Turn iPhone .mov videos, MKV, WebM, AVI and other formats into an MP4 that embeds and plays in Discord
Turn a short clip into a GIF instead, or take the sound out as MP3

How to make a video small enough for Discord

Drop the video onto the page, or click to choose it.
Choose the size it must fit: 18 MB leaves a little room under the free 20 MB limit. Drag the trim handles if only part of it matters.
Press Compress and save the MP4, then drag it into Discord.
