Merge Excel files without copying and pasting: drop in workbooks, ODS spreadsheets and CSV files, pick the sheets, and save one .xlsx or .csv. Rows can be stacked into one sheet - columns are matched by their heading, so files whose columns are in a different order, or that have extra columns, still line up - or each sheet can become its own tab in one workbook. The Split tab does the opposite: one sheet into separate files or sheets, by the values in a column or every so many rows. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
Numbers stay numbers, dates keep their date format (a CSV date written 2024-01-15 becomes a real date), and codes with leading zeros in a CSV ("00123") stay as typed, as do long ID and card numbers of 12 digits or more, which Excel would otherwise show as 1.23E+15 and cut after 15 digits. Formulas are not copied: each formula cell keeps the value Excel last saved for it, because a formula moved to another sheet would point at the wrong cells. Macros are never copied, and nothing in the files is run. To compare two sheets row by row instead, use Compare Excel; for a single big CSV, the CSV Toolkit.
- Do the columns have to be in the same order in every file?
- No. With "First row is headings" ticked, columns are matched by the text of their heading, ignoring capitals and extra spaces, so "Email" in one file and "email " in another land in the same column. A heading that only some files have becomes a column of its own, empty for the files without it. Untick it to stack columns by position instead.
- What happens to formulas when Excel files are merged?
- Each formula cell keeps the value it showed when the file was last saved, as a plain value, and the page says how many there were. Formulas are not copied because their cell references would point at the wrong place in the merged sheet. A formula with no saved value (a file made by a program that does not store results) is left empty, and the page tells you.
- How many rows can the merged sheet have?
- An Excel sheet holds 1,048,576 rows, the heading included, and the page stops with a message rather than cut rows off. Saving as CSV allows up to 2 million rows. Each file can be up to 100 MB, and 300 MB in all.
- Can I split an Excel sheet into separate files by a column?
- Yes. On the Split tab, choose the file, the sheet and the column. You get one file per value, in the order the values first appear, named after the value, each with the heading row; empty cells go into a part called "(blank)". Up to 1,000 parts at a time.
- Are my spreadsheets uploaded?
- No. The files are read and written by SheetJS in this browser tab; nothing is sent anywhere, so it is fine for payroll, customer lists and anything else private. Closing the tab clears everything.
- Are macros and charts kept?
- No. The merged workbook holds cell values, number formats, merged cells and column widths. Macros, charts, pictures, pivot tables and cell colours are not copied, and macros in the files you drop are never run.
