How does it decide what a row is?

It looks for the element whose same-named children repeat most often (for example 500 elements inside ) and makes each of those a row; the summary names it, such as "catalog > book". An XML file with nothing repeating becomes a single row.

What happens to XML attributes?

Each attribute becomes a column with an @ in front of its name, so gives the columns @id and @lang. Attributes on child elements get the child's name in front, such as price.@currency.

Does it handle namespaces and mixed content?

Namespace prefixes are dropped from element and attribute names and the xmlns declarations are left out, which is what you want in a spreadsheet. Text mixed in among child elements is gathered into a #text column, with the child elements in their own columns.

Why is my XML refused as unsafe?

XML can declare its own entities in a DOCTYPE, and a tiny file can use them to expand into gigabytes (the "billion laughs" attack). This page does not expand declared entities: it refuses a file that declares them and asks you to remove the DOCTYPE. The usual built-in entities such as & and character references are read normally. Badly formed XML is reported with the line and column of the problem.

Can Excel open XML directly instead?

Desktop Excel for Windows can import some XML through Developer › Import with a schema map, which often fails on nested data. This page needs no schema and works in any browser, including on a Mac, a Chromebook or a phone.

Is my XML file uploaded?

No. It is read and converted in this browser tab; nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else.

About this XML to Excel converter

XML is still how many systems export data: product feeds, accounting and bank exports, government open data, RSS, configuration and old database dumps. Excel can import XML only with a schema and a fiddly mapping step, and not at all in Excel for the web or on a Mac in many cases. This page finds the element that repeats (each <product> in a catalogue, each <item> in a feed), makes each one a row and writes an .xlsx you can preview first. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.

Inside each row, attributes become columns named with an @ (@id), child elements become columns named by their path (price.currency), and an element that repeats inside a row becomes extra rows or an extra sheet, as you choose. The XML is read by the site's own strict reader, and the workbook written with SheetJS.

What you can do

Convert any well-formed .xml file, or XML pasted in, to .xlsx or CSV
The repeating element found automatically and made the rows
Attributes as @columns, child elements as dotted columns, text beside child elements in a #text column
Namespace prefixes dropped from names, so g:price is just price
Text that is plainly a number becomes a number (can be turned off); codes with leading zeros stay text
Nested repeating elements as extra rows or linked extra sheets
Preview every sheet before saving

For JSON data, use JSON to Excel or JSON to CSV; Excel to JSON turns a spreadsheet into JSON. To format or convert XML itself, the Format Converter turns XML into JSON or YAML.
