PNG is the picture format to choose when a page is mostly text, lines, charts or diagrams: it is lossless, so letters stay perfectly sharp with none of the smudgy edges JPG compression leaves, and the page background stays transparent, so the page can sit on a coloured slide or website. This page draws each page with pdf.js, the PDF engine inside Firefox, and saves it as a PNG at the resolution you pick. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
- Should I choose PNG or JPG?
- PNG for pages of text, tables, charts, diagrams and drawings: it is lossless, so text stays razor sharp, and the background can be transparent. JPG for pages that are mostly photographs or scans: the files are much smaller and the slight softening is hard to see in a photo. Both can be picked here.
- Which resolution makes a good PNG?
- 150 dpi suits screens, slides and chats: an A4 page comes out about 1240 × 1754 pixels. 300 dpi is for printing or zooming in (2480 × 3508 for A4), and 600 dpi for fine detail, though PNG files at that size are large. The pixel size of a page is shown before you save. A page is never drawn larger than 12,000 pixels on a side.
- Why does the background look black or checkered?
- Most PDFs do not paint a white page behind their text, so the PNG keeps that area transparent. A picture viewer may show transparency as a checkerboard or, in some dark-mode apps, as black. It looks right on a white page or slide; if you need a solid white background, save as JPG instead, which always puts the page on white.
- Can I select or copy the text in the PNG?
- No: a PNG is a picture of the page. Keep the PDF for searchable text, or to pull the words out of a picture, use the OCR Toolkit. To edit the text, PDF to Word turns it into a document.
- How do I convert a PDF to PNG on an iPhone or Android phone?
- Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap the box and pick the PDF from Files or Downloads. One page is saved as a PNG (on iPhone, offered to save to Files or Photos); several arrive as a ZIP, which the Files app opens. A long PDF at 300 dpi or more needs a lot of memory, so on a phone use 150 dpi or save it a few pages at a time.
- Is my PDF uploaded to make the PNGs?
- No. The PDF is opened and its pages drawn into PNGs in this browser tab on your device; nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else.
