SOLIDWORKS is Dassault Systèmes' 3D design program for parts, assemblies and their 2D drawings. It runs only on Windows and is sold by subscription, so a supplier's part, a student's homework or an old project folder can leave you with .sldprt and .slddrw files and nothing that opens them, on a Mac least of all. The format is closed and there is no free official viewer for the web.
Every SOLIDWORKS file does carry an open part: the picture SOLIDWORKS saves of the model (or of each drawing sheet) as it last looked on screen, and a set of document properties. This page reads exactly that, from both the compound-file format of SOLIDWORKS 2014 and earlier and the newer format used since 2015, so you can see what a file is, which version made it, who saved it and when, and which part files an assembly or drawing needs - often enough to sort a folder or check you were sent the right thing. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
- Why can't I rotate the SOLIDWORKS model here?
- Because the shape of the model is stored in SOLIDWORKS's own closed format, which nothing outside SOLIDWORKS reads reliably. What the file stores openly is a flat picture of the model as it was last seen, plus its properties, and that is what this page shows. For a 3D model you can turn, open a STEP export of the part in the STEP Viewer.
- How do I get a STEP file from a SOLIDWORKS part?
- In SOLIDWORKS, open the part or assembly and choose File, Save As, then STEP AP214 (*.step; *.stp) as the type. If you do not have SOLIDWORKS, ask whoever sent the file for a STEP copy: most suppliers and parts catalogues offer one, and it opens in almost every CAD program.
- Which SOLIDWORKS version made this file?
- The page reads the version number SOLIDWORKS stores in the file and names its release, for example file version 11000 for SOLIDWORKS 2018. That tells you whether your copy of SOLIDWORKS can open it: SOLIDWORKS opens files from older versions but not from newer ones.
- Why does my SOLIDWORKS file show no preview?
- SOLIDWORKS normally saves the picture each time the file is saved, but a file can be written without one, for example by a program that makes SOLIDWORKS files automatically, or a template made from an empty document. Then only the file's details can be shown.
- Why are the parts of my assembly listed as separate files?
- A SOLIDWORKS assembly does not contain its parts: it points at each part file by the folder it was in. The list shows those paths as they were when the assembly was last saved. To send an assembly with everything it needs, SOLIDWORKS's File, Pack and Go copies it and its parts into one folder or ZIP.
- Are my SOLIDWORKS files uploaded?
- No. Each file is read by this page in your browser and never leaves your device, so a confidential design stays where it is.
