About this MP3 cutter, audio trimmer and ringtone maker Cut the part you want out of a song, a voice memo, an interview or a podcast recording - the chorus of a song, one answer from an interview, the useful minute of a long voice memo - and save it as MP3, M4A, an iPhone ringtone or WAV. Many online cutters upload the file first and cap its size; this one decodes and cuts it in your browser, so a private recording stays on your computer and the only size limit is your device's memory. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
The cut is made from a full-quality decode, not from the low-rate copy used to draw the waveform, and you can type start and end times to the millisecond. It can also reduce steady background noise under speech - hiss, hum, fans, room tone - with RNNoise, a small open-source neural network that runs on your computer. For heavier noise, or the sound of a video, Remove Background Noise uses DeepFilterNet, a larger model that gives a cleaner result.

The waveform is drawn so you can see the quiet gaps and loud parts. Drag the shaded handles to the part you want, or type the Start and End times in seconds, and press Play selection to check it. Tick Fade in or Fade out and set how many seconds each lasts; tick Mix to mono for a smaller file of speech. If there is steady noise under the speech, tick Reduce background noise, compare Play cleaned with Play selection, and set the Strength. MP3 is already chosen under Save as; pick M4A, M4R or WAV instead if you like, and press Download. How to make a ringtone for iPhone or Android Set the trimmer up for a ringtone : the first 30 seconds of a song are selected when it opens, with a short fade in and a gentler fade out already on, and M4R chosen for an iPhone.
Drop a song onto the page. The first 30 seconds are selected. Drag the shaded selection to the part you want, or type the Start time and press 30 seconds from the start. Press Play selection to hear it. Leave Fade in and Fade out on, or change their lengths. Under Save as, keep M4R for an iPhone you will connect to a computer, or choose M4A to set it on the iPhone itself (recent iOS) or with GarageBand, or MP3 for Android. Press Download. Follow the steps under Then put it on your phone. Putting a ringtone on an iPhone There are three honest ways; none needs a paid app. With a computer , on any version of iOS: connect the iPhone, then drag the M4R onto it in Finder on a Mac (the iPhone is in Finder's sidebar), or in the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows. A ringtone added this way can be up to 40 seconds. On the iPhone itself, on recent iOS (26 and later) : save the clip as M4A, keep it in the Files app, open it, tap Share and choose Use as Ringtone; if it is not in the list, look under More. Apple has not published the details, so this follows how current versions behave: keep the clip to 30 seconds or less, and expect songs from Apple Music not to work. With GarageBand , Apple's free app: import the M4A into a project, then choose Share, Ringtone; GarageBand shortens a ringtone to 30 seconds. Whichever way, the ringtone then appears at the top of Settings, Sounds & Haptics, Ringtone, and can also be given to one contact in the Contacts app.
Putting a ringtone on an Android phone Android takes an MP3 or M4A of any length. Copy the file to the phone's Ringtones folder (over a USB cable, or by downloading it on the phone and moving it with the Files app), then open Settings, Sound (on Samsung phones, Sounds and vibration), Ringtone, and pick it. Many phones also let you choose any audio file from that screen with a + or My sounds button, so the file can stay in Downloads. The names of the menus vary a little between makers.
Questions
Which format should I save the clip as? MP3 plays everywhere and is the usual choice. M4A (AAC) sounds as good at a smaller size and suits Apple devices. M4R is the same AAC file named the way an iPhone expects a ringtone. WAV is uncompressed and adds no loss of its own, which is best if you will edit the clip again; it is about six times the size of the MP3.
How long can an iPhone ringtone be? Up to 40 seconds for an M4R added through Finder, the Apple Devices app or iTunes; a longer one is not taken when you add it. GarageBand shortens a ringtone to 30 seconds, and Use as Ringtone on recent iOS is best kept to 30 seconds too (Apple does not publish its limit). A ringtone only plays until you answer or the call goes to voicemail - about 20 to 30 seconds - so 30 seconds is plenty, which is why the ringtone set-up starts there.
What is the difference between M4R and M4A? None inside: both are AAC audio in the same MP4 container, here at 192 kbps. M4R is the name iPhones and Finder expect for a ringtone, so it is the one to drag onto the iPhone from a computer. For Use as Ringtone on recent iOS, M4A is the safe choice: it is the iPhone's own format.
Can I make an iPhone ringtone without a computer? Yes. On recent iOS (26 and later), save the clip as M4A of 30 seconds or less, keep it in the Files app, and use Share, Use as Ringtone if your iPhone offers it. On any version, you can import the M4A into GarageBand on the iPhone and use Share, Ringtone. Making the clip here works in Safari on the iPhone itself.
Why does my ringtone not show up in the iPhone's ringtone list? Most often the clip is too long: over 40 seconds through a computer, or over about 30 with Use as Ringtone - shorten it and save again. Through a computer, the file must be named .m4r and dragged onto the iPhone itself, not into a music library. With Use as Ringtone, open the file from the Files app; the option is not offered for songs from Apple Music, or on iOS before 26.
Will trimming reduce the quality? A little, when you save as MP3 or M4A: the clip is decoded and compressed again, not copied frame by frame from the original MP3. At 256 kbps (MP3) or 192 kbps (M4A) the extra loss is very hard to hear. Choose WAV to avoid it entirely. Two things change whatever you choose: the browser decodes at the computer's own sample rate, so a 44.1 kHz file usually comes out at 48 kHz, and a WAV is written as 16-bit - CD quality, but less than a 24-bit studio recording holds. Is there a file size limit for trimming audio? No set limit. The whole file is read into the browser's memory, so an album-length MP3 or an hour of WAV is fine on a computer; on a phone, keep to about half an hour at a time. A file of several gigabytes, such as a long video, may be too large to open: save its sound as audio first with the Video Converter . Can I cut out a part from the middle and keep the rest? Not in one go: the cutter keeps the part between the handles. To remove a middle section, save the part before it and the part after it as two clips, then put them together with the Audio Joiner . Can I cut the sound of a video? Save the video's sound as an MP3 first with the Video Converter , which can also trim it on the way, then cut it here. To cut the video itself, use the Video Cutter .
Does the audio trimmer work on a phone or Chromebook? Yes. It runs in Chrome on Android and Chromebooks, Safari on iPhone and iPad, and any current desktop browser. On a phone, use the Start and End boxes for exact times if the handles are too small to drag precisely. The clip is saved to your Downloads folder, or the Files app on an iPhone. iPhone voice memos can be shared to Files first, then picked here.
What kind of noise can the audio trimmer remove? Steady background noise under speech: tape or microphone hiss, mains hum, a fan or air conditioner, the general sound of a room. It reduces that noise rather than always removing it completely - the louder the noise, the more is left. It is trained on speech, so it treats most music as noise, and it does not remove echo or separate overlapping voices. Below 100% strength some of the original noise is kept, which can sound more natural.
Is there a limit on how much audio I can clean? No. Online voice enhancers often cap free use because the work runs on their servers; here it runs on your own computer, so there is nothing to meter. An hour of stereo takes a minute or two on a typical laptop, shows its progress, and can be cancelled.
Is my audio uploaded? No. The file is decoded, cut and saved in this browser tab on your device; nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else, so private recordings stay private. Use music you have the right to use for a ringtone. To put several clips together, use the Audio Joiner ; to change a song's key or speed, the Pitch, Key & Tempo Changer . To convert M4A songs and voice memos, use M4A to MP3 ; to take the sound out of a video first, the Video Converter .
