About converting PDF tables to Excel A table in a PDF is not really a table: the file only says where each word sits on the page. Copy and paste it and the columns collapse into one jumbled column. This tool rebuilds the table. It reads the position of every piece of text on each page, groups the text into rows, and finds the columns from the lines drawn between them, or, where there are none, from the gaps that run straight down the page. The table found is shown on the page, so you can see exactly what will go into the spreadsheet and move a column line that is in the wrong place.
Numbers come through as numbers Excel can add up, not as text, whichever way the PDF writes them. Each page can go on its own sheet, or all of them onto one, with the column headings repeated at the top of each page left out. Everything happens in your browser: the PDF is never uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Convert tables in a PDF to Excel (.xlsx) or CSV Find columns from ruled lines, or from the gaps between columns when there are no lines See the table and its columns drawn on the page, and drag a column line, add one or remove one Choose the table's top and bottom, to leave out titles and totals Use the same columns on every page of a long report Put all pages on one sheet, or each page on its own Read a bank statement as transactions, and save it for accounting software Open a password-protected PDF with its password How to convert a PDF table to Excel Drop the PDF onto the page, or click to choose it. Check the blue box and the column lines on each page. Drag a line that splits or merges a column, and drag the box's edges to take in the right rows. Look over the preview, then press Excel or CSV. Converting bank statements Banks give out statements as PDFs, but bookkeeping, budgeting and tax returns need the transactions in a spreadsheet or in accounting software. Typing them in takes hours, and the converters that do it for you upload your statement to their servers, limit how many pages you can convert for free, and charge a subscription after that. This page reads the statement in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no sign-up or paid tier: it reads up to 300 pages of a statement at a time.
It finds the table of transactions on each page and works out which column is which: from the headings, or, where there are none, from what is in the columns. Dates and amounts are read in whichever style the bank prints them, descriptions that wrap onto a second line are joined back together, and balances brought and carried forward are recognised. Then every transaction is checked: the previous balance plus the amount has to give the balance printed. Rows that do not add up are highlighted, so you know exactly which lines to look at before you rely on the export. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
Many banks, especially in Europe, also let you download statements as files made for accounting software: MT940 (often .sta) and the newer CAMT.053 XML, sometimes several days zipped together. These need no reading of a page layout, so they convert exactly: the booking and value dates, the amount, the other party's name and account, the payment reference and the bank's reference come straight from the file. Each statement is checked too: the opening balance plus every transaction has to give the closing balance, and each statement has to start where the one before it ended.
Convert PDF bank statements to Excel (.xlsx) or CSV Open MT940 files (.sta, .mt940, .txt), including the structured details German and Dutch banks write, and CAMT.053 XML, also CAMT.052 and CAMT.054, on its own or in a ZIP Save OFX for QuickBooks, Xero, GnuCash and Moneydance, or QIF for Quicken and GnuCash Read amounts written as 1,234.56 or 1.234,56, in brackets, with a minus sign before or after, or marked CR and DR Read dates as 31/01/2026, 01/31/2026, 2026-01-31, 31 Jan 2026 or 31 Jan Split money in and money out, and keep the running balance Check every balance and highlight any row that does not add up; for MT940 and CAMT, check each statement's opening and closing balance Change which column is which, or move the column lines on the page, if a statement is laid out unusually Convert statements of up to 300 pages, as often as you like How to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel Choose Bank statement above the table once a PDF is open, or open the page in bank statement mode , which also takes MT940 and CAMT files.
Download the statement as a PDF, MT940 or CAMT file from online banking, then drop it onto the page. Check the summary: the number of transactions, the opening and closing balances, and whether every balance adds up. If a row is highlighted, look at that page and move a column line if one is out of place. Press Excel, CSV, OFX or QIF. Getting statements ready for your accountant or a tax return Bookkeepers and accountants usually ask for a year of transactions in a spreadsheet, not a stack of PDFs. Convert each month's statement and save it as Excel, then copy the rows into one workbook, one statement after another. Add a column for a category (income, rent, supplies, travel, personal and so on) and fill it in; Excel's filter, SUMIF or a PivotTable then gives a total for each category for the year. Money out and money in are saved as numbers, so the totals add up without retyping anything. Keep the original PDFs too: the spreadsheet is a working copy, and the statement is the record. This page converts the statement; it does not decide what counts as income or an expense, which is a question for your accountant or tax adviser.
Questions Why is my PDF showing no table? Either the PDF is a scan, a picture of the page with no text in it, or the table is laid out in a way the detection did not recognise. For a scan there is no text to read here, but Image to Excel can read it: it recognises the text on each page first, and you check the result. For anything else, drag the blue box over the table and double-click inside it to add a column line between each pair of columns.
Will the numbers work in Excel formulas? Yes. Anything that reads as an amount, including 1,234.56, 1.234,56, (12.00) and 12.00-, is saved as a number, and the decimal separator is worked out from the whole document. Dates are left as they are printed, and so are codes a number would change: one with a leading zero, such as an account or sort code, or one longer than 15 digits, such as a card number. Can it convert a whole PDF, with its text and layout, to Excel? It converts the tables: the rows and columns of data, which is what a spreadsheet is for. Headings, paragraphs and pictures outside the table are left out. To turn a whole PDF into an editable document, a PDF to Word converter is the better tool.
What about bank statements? Switch to Bank statement. It reads the table as transactions, joins descriptions that wrap onto a second line, checks every running balance, and saves Excel, CSV, OFX or QIF. See Converting bank statements above.
How do I get a year of bank transactions into one spreadsheet? Download the twelve monthly statements from online banking (or the yearly MT940 or CAMT file, if your bank offers one), convert each here and save it as Excel or CSV, and paste them into one sheet in date order. Check that each statement's opening balance is the closing balance of the one before, so no month is missing. Then sort, filter or total the year however your accountant or bookkeeping software asks.
Which banks does it work with? Any bank whose statement is a PDF with real text in it, which is what online banking gives you, or that lets you download MT940 or CAMT.053 files. It does not depend on knowing the bank: it reads the layout of the page. A paper statement that has been scanned is a picture with no text, and cannot be read.
What does "does not add up" mean? For each transaction, the previous balance plus money in, minus money out, should equal the balance printed beside it. When it does not, the transaction was probably read wrongly, often because two columns ran together or a line wrapped unusually. Look at that row on the page and adjust the column lines; when every balance adds up, the conversion is right.
How do I convert an MT940 or CAMT.053 file to Excel or CSV? Drop the .sta or .xml file, or the ZIP your bank sent, onto the page and press Excel or CSV. You get one row per transaction with the booking date, value date, description, the other party and their account, both references, the account and currency, the amount and a running balance worked out from the opening balance. Entries a CAMT file marks as pending are left out, because the statement's balances do not include them; the page says how many.
Which file should I choose for my accounting software? QuickBooks, Xero, GnuCash and Moneydance import OFX. Quicken and GnuCash import QIF. When a statement file has more than one account or currency, the OFX holds one statement for each, and the QIF comes as a ZIP with one file for each, as a QIF file holds one account. For anything else, or to work in a spreadsheet, choose Excel or CSV.
My statement has no year in the dates. What year is used? The year printed most often elsewhere on the statement, usually in the statement period at the top. Check the dates of a statement that runs from December into January.
Is my bank statement uploaded? No. A bank statement is about as private as a document gets, and this one is read by your browser on your computer and never sent anywhere.
Can I use it to get documents ready for bookkeeping or a tax return? Yes, for the tables in them: a list of invoices or receipts, a payslip, a brokerage or credit card statement, a year-end summary from a payment platform. Save each as Excel, put the rows together in one workbook, and add a column for whatever your accountant asks for, such as a category or a client. The amounts are numbers, so Excel's SUM, SUMIF or a PivotTable can total them for the year. It converts what is printed; it does not tell you how anything should be treated for tax.
Does the PDF leave my computer? No. It is read in your browser on your computer, which matters for the documents people most often need tables from: statements, payslips, invoices and reports.
