About this PDF editor and toolkit Merge several PDFs into one, reorder or delete pages, split a document, draw and annotate on a page, and redact areas before exporting. The finished file can be compressed and locked with a password, and a PDF that already has a password opens here once you type it. The output settings - cover page, page numbers, watermark, split and compression - can be saved in this browser and reloaded, so a repeated job does not have to be set up again each time.
Most online PDF tools upload your document to a server. This one does not — the file is read and rewritten in the page. The password and compression options use qpdf, which the page downloads the first time you use one of them. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Merge several PDFs into one file Drag pages into a new order, and rotate, duplicate or delete them Split a PDF into several files by page range, downloaded as one ZIP Add text or draw freehand on a page Redact a PDF so the text underneath is removed, not just covered Compress a PDF, with the size before and after shown Password-protect a PDF with AES-256 encryption Remove the password from a PDF you know the password to Add a cover page, page numbers or a watermark Save your output settings for a job you repeat Compress a PDF to a size you type, such as 100 KB or 1 MB (Compress tab) Take an open password or printing and copying restrictions off a PDF, several at once (Unlock tab) Find and remove blank pages from a scan, keeping bookmarks and forms (Remove blank pages tab) Stamp Bates numbers across one or many PDFs, with a CSV log (Bates numbering tab) Turn a PDF into a booklet to print double-sided and fold (Booklet tab) Put JPG, PNG, HEIC and other pictures into one PDF (Images to PDF tab) Rebuild a damaged PDF that will not open (Repair tab) Compare two PDFs word by word and page by page (Compare tab) No page count or file size limit beyond your own machine’s memory How to merge or edit a PDF Drop one or more PDFs onto the page. Add several and they are treated as one document, in the order you added them. If one is password-protected, type its password in the box that appears under it. Reorder or delete pages, draw or annotate on a page, or drag a box over anything you want redacted. Open Advanced Output Studio if you need a cover page, page numbers, a watermark, compression, or a password on the finished file. Press Generate Output PDF to build the file and download it. Save Setup keeps the settings for next time, but never the password. Questions about merging and editing
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere? No. The document is read and rewritten inside the page by pdf-lib, PDF.js and qpdf, which run in your browser. That is the difference that matters for a contract, a payslip or a medical letter - the usual free PDF site uploads the file to a server you know nothing about.
Does redaction remove the text, or just cover it? It removes it. Any page you redact is rendered to an image on export, so the text underneath is gone rather than hidden. Nothing of the original page is carried into the file through a link or a form field on another page either - checked by redacting a page that another page links to and finding its text nowhere in the file, compressed or not. The trade-off is that the whole of that page becomes a picture: nothing on it stays selectable, searchable or readable by a screen reader, and the file gets larger. The same happens to any page you add text or a drawing to. Other pages keep their text and images, and links between kept pages still work, but the file is rebuilt from its pages, so its form fields, bookmarks, page labels, layers and document properties are not carried over. If you only rotate pages, nothing is rebuilt and all of that is kept. Can I change the text that is already in a PDF? Not on this page, which adds text on top of a page. Edit PDF Text changes the words themselves - click a line and retype it - in the PDF's own font where it has the letters, keeping the page's text selectable and searchable.
Can I split one PDF into several files? Yes. Split Export in the Advanced Output Studio turns each page group you type, such as 1-3, 4-7, into its own PDF, named with a prefix you choose. The parts download together as one ZIP, because browsers block a page that tries to start several downloads at once. Compression and a password, if you choose them, are applied to every part.
How do I take the password off a PDF I already know the password to? Drop the PDF in and type its password in the box that appears under the file. The page decrypts it with qpdf, and from then on it behaves like any other PDF here: preview it, edit it, or press Generate Output PDF to save a copy without the password. This only works with a password you already know. It does not guess, crack or recover one, and a wrong password is simply refused. A PDF that opens without a password but restricts printing or copying is opened the way any PDF reader opens it, and the copy you save does not keep those restrictions.
How strong is the password it puts on the output PDF? Password under Advanced Output Studio encrypts the file with AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF format has, which Adobe Acrobat and Reader open, as do the PDF viewers in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. The one password both opens the file and owns it, so no printing or copying limits are set. It is never saved, not even by Save Setup, and nothing is sent anywhere, which also means nobody can recover it for you if it is lost. As with any password, length is what makes it hard to guess.
How much will compression shrink my PDF? It depends on what the file is made of. Photos and colour or grey scans shrink the most: they are re-saved as JPEG at the quality you choose, and any image bigger than the pixel limit is scaled down, so a document built from phone photos can end up a fraction of its size. A PDF that is mostly text shrinks a little, from packing its structure tighter and recompressing its streams. Black-and-white fax-style scans and JPEG 2000 images are left as they are, and choosing lossless leaves every image untouched. Text stays real text rather than becoming a picture. The status line shows the size before and after, and if nothing made the file smaller you get it uncompressed, never a bigger one.
What is Save Setup for? It keeps the Advanced Output Studio settings - the cover page, numbering, watermark, split and compression options - in this browser, so a job you repeat every month does not have to be set up again. It is stored on this machine only, and clearing site data removes it. A password is never stored. Compress a PDF to a size Open the Compress tab
Upload forms, job portals, court and visa sites and email often refuse a PDF over a set size - 100 KB, 500 KB, 2 MB - and most compressors only offer "low, medium, high" and leave you guessing, often after making you upload the file and capping how many you can do a day. This one takes the size you need and finds the lightest compression that gets under it, so nothing is spoiled more than it has to be. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
It works in three stages and stops at the first one that fits. First the file is rewritten with qpdf without changing anything you can see: streams packed more tightly and duplicate data shared. If that is not enough, the pictures in it are made lighter, step by step - JPEG quality from 85 down to 25, and photos larger than they need to be scaled down, from 3,000 to 560 pixels across at most - while the text, fonts and drawings stay exactly as they were, sharp and searchable. Only if you allow it, and only if nothing else reaches the size, are whole pages turned into pictures, at 150 dpi down to 52 dpi.
What you can do Compress a PDF to 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB, 5 MB, 10 MB or any size you type Or press Just make it smaller: one balanced setting, the size before and after, and never a bigger file Keep the text sharp and searchable: only the pictures are made lighter Shrink scanned PDFs and PDFs full of phone photos the most Turn pages into pictures for the very smallest sizes, if you choose to See how it was done - the JPEG quality and picture size used - before you keep it Sizes are counted in thousands of bytes, so the file passes whichever way a form counts a KB How to compress a PDF to a size Drop the PDF onto the page. A common size below half the file's size is filled in for you. Type the size it must be under in Make it at most, or press one of the common sizes. Tick the option to turn pages into pictures only if the PDF is a scan or the size is very small. Press Compress. The smaller PDF downloads as soon as it fits, named "(compressed)" after the original. Press Stop at any time. With no size to reach, press Just make it smaller instead. The file is rewritten without changing anything you can see, and once more with its pictures at JPEG quality 70 and photos at most 2,000 pixels across - sharp on screen and printed at A4 - while text, fonts and drawings stay as they are. The lighter pictures are kept only if they save at least a tenth more than the rewrite alone. The page shows the size before and after; if nothing came out smaller than your file, it says so and makes no new file.
Which PDFs shrink, and by how much Scans and PDFs made from phone photos usually shrink the most, because a photo of a page holds far more detail than reading it needs. Reports with photos and charts shrink well too. A PDF that is only text, such as one saved from Word, is usually small already: the lossless rewrite may save a little, and anything more means turning the pages into pictures. If nothing reaches the size, the page shows how small it got and lets you save that copy anyway.
Questions about compressing a PDF Why won't my PDF get small enough? A PDF that is mostly text is usually small already, and text cannot be compressed much further without turning it into pictures. A long document may simply hold more than fits the size asked for. Tick the option to turn pages into pictures, choose a larger size, or split the PDF into parts with the PDF Toolkit .
What does Just make it smaller do to my PDF? It applies one balanced setting rather than aiming at a size: pictures are recompressed as JPEG at quality 70 where that makes them smaller, JPEG photos more than 2,000 pixels across are scaled down to that, and the file is packed more tightly. Text stays text - selectable and searchable - and fonts, drawings, links and form fields are kept. The lighter pictures are kept only when they save at least a tenth more than repacking alone. If nothing comes out smaller than your file, you are told so and the original is the one to keep - you never get a bigger file.
Will it look worse? Only as much as the size requires. If rewriting the file is enough, nothing you can see changes; if not, the pictures are compressed at the lightest strength that fits, and the text and drawings are never touched. Turning pages into pictures is used only when you allow it. How do I get a scanned PDF under 100 KB for an upload form? Type 100 KB, tick the option to turn pages into pictures, and press Compress. A scan of a page or two often fits; one of many pages may not, and then save the pages the form actually asks for as a separate PDF with the PDF Toolkit and compress that.
What is lost when pages are turned into pictures? The text can no longer be selected, searched or copied, and links and fillable form fields stop working, because each page becomes a single picture of itself. The pages keep their size and look the same, if a little softer. Leave the option unticked when you need the text, and the tool will never do it. Can it compress a password-protected PDF? Not while it is locked. If you know the password, unlock it with the Unlock PDF tool first, then compress the unlocked copy.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it? No. The PDF is compressed in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server. There is no size or daily limit beyond your device's memory, so a long scanned contract or a bank statement never leaves your computer. Unlock a PDF Open the Unlock tab
A locked PDF is locked in one of two ways. An open password encrypts the whole document, so nothing in it can be read without the password; Adobe calls this the Document Open password. Restrictions set by an owner (or Permissions) password are different: the PDF opens in any reader without asking, but the reader is told not to allow printing, copying text, editing, commenting or filling in forms. This tool tells you which one a PDF has and saves a copy without it.
For an open password, you type it and the tool saves a copy that opens without one, so you do not have to type it every time. For restrictions, no password is needed: the document is already readable, and the copy simply leaves the restrictions out. It is done with qpdf, the open-source PDF tool, which the page downloads the first time you save a copy. The PDF is read and rewritten in your browser and never uploaded. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Remove the open password from a PDF you know the password to Remove restrictions on printing, copying, editing, commenting and filling in forms, without a password See exactly what a PDF's restrictions stop before you change anything Unlock several PDFs at once and save them as one .zip Works with every standard PDF encryption: 40 and 128-bit RC4, and 128 and 256-bit AES How to remove a password from a PDF Drop the PDF onto the page, or click to choose it. Several can go in at once. If it asks for a password, type it. If it only has restrictions, the page lists what they stop. Press Save without the password or Remove restrictions. The unlocked copy downloads as "name (unlocked).pdf"; the original is not changed. With several PDFs, Unlock all saves them as one .zip. Before you unlock The copy you save has no protection at all, so anyone who gets hold of it can open it. Keep it somewhere private, and keep the original if you need to send the document on with its password. To lock a PDF again with a password of your own, use the PDF Toolkit , which encrypts it with AES-256.
Questions about unlocking a PDF
Can it unlock a PDF if I have forgotten the password? If it is the open password, no. That password is the key the document is encrypted with, and this tool does not guess, crack or recover passwords. If the PDF opens without a password but will not print or copy, yes: those restrictions are not protected by anything you need to know, and the tool removes them without one.
Why will my PDF not let me print or copy text? Whoever made it set permissions when they saved it. The PDF is encrypted with an owner password, but readers open it with no password at all and then honour the permissions: no printing, no copying, no editing, or some mix. Drop it here to see which ones are set, and save a copy without them.
Is it legal to remove restrictions from a PDF? For your own documents, and for ones you have the right to print or edit, it is a common task: a form you filled in, a statement from your bank, a report a colleague locked by accident. Use it for those. Removing the restrictions does not give you any rights over a document that you did not already have, and copyright still applies to what is in it.
How do I stop typing the password every time I open a bank statement or payslip? Banks, payroll services and utility companies often send statements as PDFs locked with a password made from your own details, which their email or website explains. Drop the statement here, type that password once, and press Save without the password: the copy opens straight away from then on. The password is checked by your browser and is not stored or sent anywhere.
What if it says the password is wrong? Passwords are case-sensitive, so check Caps Lock, and copy it from the email it came in if you can, without a space at either end. If a statement's password is built from your details, check the exact format its sender gives, such as how a date is written. The tool tries only the password you type; it never tries others.
Does the unlocked copy look any different? No. Text, pictures, fonts, links, bookmarks and form fields are all kept; only the encryption is taken off. The copy can be a little bigger or smaller than the original, because the file is rewritten.
What happens to a digital signature? A signature covers the exact bytes of the file, and removing the encryption rewrites them, so the signature on the copy no longer validates. Keep the original if the signature matters.
Does the file or the password get sent anywhere? No. The PDF is read and rewritten by your browser on your computer, and so is any password you type. Most online PDF unlockers upload the file to their servers to do this; this one does the work in the page. Remove blank pages from a PDF Open the Remove blank pages tab
Remove blank pages from scanned documents, double-sided scans of single-sided paper, printouts with separator sheets, and PDFs exported with empty pages between sections. Every page is drawn small and measured: a page with no ink, or only dust and specks, is found and picked for removal, and you see every page as a thumbnail before anything is saved. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
Only the blank pages are taken out; the pages you keep are not redrawn or re-compressed, so text stays searchable and pictures keep their quality. Bookmarks and links that pointed at a removed page are moved to the next page, and form fields, document properties and the remaining bookmarks stay. To delete, reorder or rotate other pages by hand, use the PDF Toolkit ; to make the result smaller, Compress PDF .
What you can do Find blank pages automatically in PDFs of up to 2,000 pages Choose how blank a page must be, from no marks at all to a few lines of text Ignore page numbers, punch holes, scanner shadows, dust and show-through from the other side See every page as a thumbnail, with the blank ones picked, and change any choice with a click Pages whose content draws nothing at all are marked empty Save a copy without the blank pages; the other pages are kept exactly as they were Bookmarks and links to removed pages move to the next page; form fields stay Stop a long check part-way and work with the pages checked so far How to remove blank pages from a PDF Drop your PDF on the page, or press browse. Wait while each page is checked; blank pages get a red border and are marked Remove. Move the slider if too many or too few pages were picked, and click any page to change its choice. Press Save PDF. The copy is named "(no blank pages)"; your original is untouched. Questions about removing blank pages
How does it tell a blank page from one with content? Each page is drawn about 360 pixels wide and the pixels darker or more colourful than the paper are counted (so faint pencil and pale highlighter count), leaving out a band round the edges, light grey show-through, and specks too small to be writing. A page whose share of ink is at or under the level you choose counts as blank. The first setting keeps any page with a visible mark; the fourth also removes a page with a single line, such as "This page intentionally left blank", and the last a few lines or a stamp.
Will it remove a page that only has a page number? Usually yes, because a band round the edge of each page is ignored, which is where page numbers, headers and punch holes sit. If you want such a page kept, click it before saving.
Does removing pages change the rest of the PDF? No. The kept pages are copied as they are: their text, pictures, links and form fields are not redrawn or compressed again. Bookmarks or links that pointed at a removed page now open the next page. One thing changes: if the PDF had its own page numbering (page labels such as i, ii, iii), it is taken out, since the pages have moved.
Why was a page with faint writing marked as blank? Very light pencil or a pale stamp can fall under the level set. Move the slider towards "Only pages with no marks at all", or click the page to keep it. Every choice can be checked on the thumbnails before you save. Can it remove blank pages from a password-protected PDF? Not while it is protected. A PDF that needs a password to open, or that forbids changes, has to be unlocked first with Unlock PDF , which needs the password. Then drop the unlocked copy here.
Is my PDF uploaded to remove the blank pages? No. The pages are drawn, measured and removed by code running in this browser tab, so the PDF never leaves your computer. There is no page limit per day and no account. Bates numbering Open the Bates numbering tab
Bates numbering gives every page of a document set its own number, so each page can be cited exactly in litigation, discovery or an audit. This tool stamps a prefix, a zero-padded running number and an optional suffix on every page of one PDF or a whole production, continuing the count from one file to the next, and can add a confidentiality legend at the same time. Acrobat Pro charges for this; here it is free. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Number every page of one PDF or many, with the count running on from file to file Set the prefix, the starting number, how many digits (000001), and a suffix Put the number in any corner or centred at the top or bottom, with the margin, font, size and colour you choose Add a white box behind the number so it reads over text or pictures Add a legend such as CONFIDENTIAL or SUBJECT TO PROTECTIVE ORDER in another position See the first page stamped exactly as it will be saved before you save Rotated and landscape pages get the number upright in the right corner Download a production log (CSV) of each file's pages and Bates range, and carry on numbering the next batch How to add Bates numbers to PDFs Drop the PDFs onto the page and put them in order with the arrows. Type the prefix, starting number and number of digits; each file's range shows in the list. Choose the position and look, and a legend if you need one; the preview updates as you go. Press Number. One file downloads as a PDF; several come in a ZIP with the production log. Questions about Bates numbering
What is a Bates number? A unique number stamped on each page of a set of documents, usually a short prefix for the party or case followed by a zero-padded number, such as SMITH000123. It lets everyone refer to an exact page, and shows at a glance whether any pages are missing.
Does the numbering continue across several PDFs? Yes. The files are numbered in the order listed, each starting where the previous one ended, and the list shows every file's range before you save. After saving, Number the next batch from here sets the start to the next free number for the following set.
Does it change anything else in the PDF? No. The number and legend are added on top of each page; the text, pictures, bookmarks and form fields stay as they were, and the text stays searchable. The stamp itself is text in a standard PDF font.
What is the production log? A spreadsheet-ready CSV listing each file with its page count and its first and last Bates number, often needed for a privilege log or a cover letter. It is in the ZIP when several files are numbered, and can be downloaded on its own. Can it number a password-protected PDF? Not directly: an encrypted PDF cannot be changed without its password. Remove the protection with Unlock PDF first, then number the unlocked copy.
Are my documents uploaded? No. Discovery documents are often confidential, so everything happens in your browser: the PDFs are read, stamped and saved on your computer. For plain page numbers, a watermark or merging files, use the PDF Toolkit .
Make a PDF booklet Open the Booklet tab
A booklet printed on ordinary paper is a stack of sheets folded in half, each sheet carrying four pages: two on the front and two on the back. For that to read in order once folded, the pages have to be printed out of order - the last page next to page 1 on the outside sheet, page 2 next to the second-last on its back, and so on inwards. This tool does that rearranging (it is called imposition), so a PDF prints as a booklet on a normal home or office printer.
The pages are copied as they are, text and drawings included, not turned into pictures, so the booklet prints as sharp as the original. A PDF whose page count is not a multiple of 4 gets blank pages at the end. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Rearrange any PDF into saddle-stitch booklet order, two pages per landscape side Print on Letter or A4, or two pages per sheet at their actual size Blank pages added at the end automatically to make a multiple of 4 Pages kept as vectors, so text stays sharp and the file stays small Turned (rotated) pages printed upright, and filled-in form fields kept A table of which pages land on each sheet, and printing instructions How to make a booklet from a PDF Drop a PDF onto the page, or click to choose one. Choose the paper you will print on: Letter, A4, or two pages per sheet at actual size. Click Make the booklet PDF and save it. Print it double-sided, flipping on the short edge, at actual size. Fold the stack of sheets in half and staple along the fold. Questions about booklets
What does "flip on short edge" mean, and what if I get it wrong? The booklet's sheets are landscape, so the paper has to turn over along its short side for the back to come out the right way up. With "flip on long edge" every back page prints upside down. If that happens, change the setting and print again; nothing about the booklet PDF needs to change.
Why does my booklet have blank pages at the end? Each folded sheet holds exactly four pages, so a booklet always has a multiple of 4. A 10-page PDF becomes a 12-page booklet with two blank pages at the back. If you would rather have the blanks somewhere else, such as inside the front cover, add blank pages there in the original document, save it as a PDF again, and then make the booklet.
Which paper size should I choose? Choose the paper you will print on. A Letter or A4 PDF printed on Letter or A4 paper makes a booklet half that size (A4 pages become A5), with each page scaled down to fit. "Two pages per sheet at actual size" makes each sheet two of the first page wide and keeps the pages at their own size, which suits a PDF already designed at booklet size: A5 pages print on A4 paper, half-letter pages on Letter.
How many pages can one booklet have? The tool takes up to 1,000 pages, but paper sets the practical limit: a stack of more than about 10 to 12 sheets (40 to 48 pages) of ordinary paper is hard to fold and staple neatly, and the middle pages stick out at the edge. For a longer document, make several booklets from parts of it, splitting the PDF first with the PDF Toolkit.
Is my PDF uploaded to make the booklet? No. The PDF is read and rearranged by this page on your own computer, and the booklet is saved straight from it, so the tool also works for documents you would not send to a website. JPG and other images to PDF Open the Images to PDF tab
The pictures people put into a PDF are often the ones they least want on a stranger's server: a passport and a utility bill for an application, payslips, a signed contract photographed page by page, receipts for an expense claim, medical letters. This page builds the PDF in your browser, so there is no daily limit, no file-size cap, no watermark and no account. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
JPEG photos go into the PDF exactly as they are, byte for byte, so nothing is lost to recompression and the PDF is about the size of the photos together. A photo the camera took sideways, which it marks rather than turns, is turned upright first. iPhone HEIC photos, PNG screenshots (transparency kept), WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF pictures are taken too. When the PDF has to be small - an upload form that takes 2 MB at most, or an email attachment - Picture quality makes it smaller on purpose.
What you can do Combine any number of JPG (also named .jfif or .jpe), PNG, HEIC, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF pictures into one PDF, a page each Put them in the order you want: drag, use the arrows, or sort by file name (photo 2 before photo 10) Choose A4, US Letter or pages the size of each picture, portrait, landscape or to suit each one Fit the whole picture on the page, or fill the page (inside any margin) and crop what spills over Add no margin, a small one (a quarter of an inch) or a large one (half an inch) Keep JPEG quality exactly as it was, or make a smaller PDF for email and upload forms Turn sideways phone photos upright automatically How to convert JPG to PDF Drop the pictures onto the page, or click browse to choose them. They are added in file-name order; drop more to add them at the end. Drag the thumbnails into order, or use the arrows under each one. × takes one out. Choose the Page size, Orientation, Picture on the page and Margin. For printing, A4 or US Letter with a small margin is the safe choice. Leave Picture quality on Original unless the file must be small, and type a File name. Press Make the PDF. It downloads straight away; the size is shown beside it, and Save again downloads it once more. The settings The same as each picture makes every page exactly the size of its picture, counted at 96 pixels to the inch, so the PDF looks like the photos with nothing around them. A4 and US Letter give pages that print properly; with Orientation on To suit each picture, a wide photo gets a landscape page and a tall one a portrait page.
Fit shows the whole picture, centred, with white bands where its shape differs from the page. Fill scales it up until the page is covered and cuts off the edges that do not fit - good for full-page photos, wrong for documents, where it could cut off text.
Original keeps every JPEG untouched. Smaller file scales each picture to at most 2000 pixels on its longer side and saves it as a JPEG at quality 80 - about 170 dots per inch across an A4 page, still sharp in print. Smallest file uses 1240 pixels and quality 60 - about 105 dots per inch, fine on screen and for upload forms, a little soft in print. A picture that would not get smaller is left as it was. A phone photo of a few megabytes typically drops to a few hundred kilobytes.
Questions about images to PDF
Does converting JPG to PDF lower the quality? Not with Picture quality on Original. A JPEG is put into the PDF as it is - the same bytes - so it is exactly as sharp as before. Only a photo that has to be turned upright, or a picture in a format a PDF cannot hold (HEIC, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF), is redrawn first, as a high-quality JPEG or a PNG. How do I make the PDF small enough to upload or email? Choose Smaller file, make the PDF, and check the size shown beside the button. If it is still over the limit, choose Smallest file and press Make the PDF again. For an already-made PDF that is too big, use Compress PDF .
Can I put iPhone photos (HEIC) in a PDF? Yes, on any computer - HEIC photos are decoded in the page itself, so a Windows PC or Chromebook that cannot open them otherwise still can here. On an iPhone, choosing pictures from the photo library usually hands them over as JPEG anyway.
How many pictures can I combine? As many as your device's memory allows - hundreds of phone photos is fine on a computer; a phone manages fewer at once. There is no daily limit and no size cap, because nothing is sent anywhere.
Why does my photo have white bands around it on the page? A phone photo is 3:4 or 9:16, and A4 and Letter pages are a different shape, so a whole photo leaves space at two sides. Choose Fill to cover the page and crop the edges instead, or choose The same as each picture for pages that match the photos exactly. Can I scan a paper document to PDF with my phone this way? Yes: take a photo of each page, straight on and in good light, then choose them here on the phone, put them in order and make the PDF with A4 or US Letter. The pages stay photos; to make the text searchable afterwards, run the PDF through the OCR Toolkit . Repair a PDF that will not open Open the Repair tab
A PDF is a collection of pieces - pages, fonts, pictures - with an index at the end that says where each one is in the file. Most PDFs that will not open have a problem with that index, not with the pages: a download or copy that stopped before the end, where the index is kept; an e-mail or website that wrapped the file in something extra; or a program that crashed while saving and left the index pointing at the wrong places. Readers give up with "the file is damaged and could not be repaired" or "failed to load PDF document", though the pages are still in the file.
This page reads the file piece by piece, as it is actually laid out, instead of trusting the index, and writes it out again with a new one. A file that stops part way keeps every page whose pieces arrived; the repaired PDF is then opened by a second reader to show that its pages draw. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Repair a PDF that Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge or Preview will not open, with "damaged", "corrupt" or "failed to load" errors Get back the pages of a PDF whose download, e-mail attachment or copy did not finish Fix a PDF with something else in front of it, from an e-mail program or a website, that readers do not recognise Rebuild the page list when it was lost, putting every page found back in order See the repaired pages before saving, and which could not be drawn Save the text that can still be read when the PDF itself is beyond repair How to repair a damaged PDF Drop the PDF on the box above. It is checked and repaired at once. Look at the repaired pages, and at what was wrong with the file. Save the repaired PDF; the original is not changed. Questions about repairing a PDF
Why does my PDF say it is damaged and could not be repaired? Usually because the file is incomplete or its index is wrong: a download that was interrupted, an attachment that was cut short, a copy from a failing USB stick, or a program that crashed while saving. The pages are often still inside the file. Drop it here: it is rebuilt without relying on the broken index, and you see the pages before you save it.
Some pages come out blank. Can they be recovered? Not from this file. A page comes out blank when its text or pictures were in the part of the file that is missing - the end of a cut-off download, say. The page itself is kept, so the rest of the document stays in order. Downloading the PDF again, or finding the original e-mail or backup, is the way to get those pages back.
Is a PDF that is 0 KB repairable? No. A file of 0 bytes, or one that is all zeros, never had the document written into it - nothing of it is left to rebuild. The page says so straight away. Look for another copy, or run a recovery program on the disk or card it came from. The PDF asks for a password. Can this help? A damaged PDF with a password is repaired with its encryption as it was, so it still needs the password to open. But when the end of such a file is missing, the key to read it went with it, and the page says so rather than give back pages nobody can read. To take a password off a PDF you can already open, use the PDF Toolkit .
Is my PDF uploaded to repair it? No. Most online repair tools send your document to their server. Here it is read and rebuilt by your browser on your own computer, which matters for contracts, statements and anything private. Compare two PDFs Open the Compare tab
When a contract, a lease or a policy comes back "with a few small changes", the only safe assumption is that something else changed too. This compares the two versions word by word and lists every difference with its page number: what was taken out in red, what was put in in green, with a few words either side so each one reads in context. Side by side shows both documents in full with the changes marked, and stepping through them one at a time is how you make sure you have seen them all.
The comparison follows the words, not the layout, so a paragraph that moved onto the next page or text that rewrapped differently is not reported as a change. For what words cannot show - a drawing, a signature, a table’s lines, a logo - Pages as pictures lays each pair of pages over each other and marks every area that looks different. Tiny shading differences are ignored, so the marks show real changes rather than noise. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
What you can do Compare two PDFs word by word and list every change with its page number Removed words in red and added words in green, with a few words either side for context Side by side view of both documents with the changes marked, and Previous and Next change buttons Text that rewrapped or moved onto the next page is not reported as a change Compare pages as pictures, with every area that looks different marked in red, to catch changes to drawings, signatures, logos and formatting Ignore case and punctuation when comparing Count of words added and removed Print or save the list of changes as a PDF report Works with any two PDFs that have text in them, such as contracts, reports, policies and specifications Scanned PDFs, which have no text, are compared as pictures only; password-protected PDFs need the password removed first How to compare two PDF files Drop the earlier PDF on the left and the later one on the right - or both at once. Read the list of changes, each with its page number. Click one to see it in place in both documents. Use Pages as pictures for layout, drawings and images, and Print report to keep a list of the changes as a PDF. Questions about comparing PDFs
How do I find the differences between two PDF files? Drop both files here. Every word that was added or removed is listed with its page number and highlighted in both documents, and the Pages as pictures view marks anything that looks different on the page, such as a changed drawing or a moved logo.
Will it show changes to formatting, like bold or font size? Not as text changes - the comparison is of the words themselves. A change of font, size or colour does show up in Pages as pictures, where the two pages are overlaid and every area that looks different is marked in red.
Is this the same as Adobe Acrobat’s Compare Files? It does the same core job - listing what was added and removed between two versions - without a subscription and without uploading either document. Acrobat also reports style changes by name; here those show up visually instead.
Why is a whole page marked as different in the picture view? Because something earlier in the document pushed its contents up or down - an added line moves everything below it, so the page looks different everywhere. The word comparison is not affected by that and still shows the actual change.
