What size is a Minecraft skin file?

A standard skin is a PNG picture 64 pixels wide and 64 high. Skins made before 2014 are 64 × 32: they have no separate left arm and leg, and no outer layer on the body and limbs. This editor opens both and always saves 64 × 64.

What is the difference between classic and slim arms?

Classic arms are 4 pixels wide and slim arms 3 pixels wide; the rest of the skin is the same. The PNG does not say which it is for, so choose the same arm model here and in the game's skin settings, or the arms will look cut off or stretched.

What is the outer layer of a skin for?

Each body part has a second, slightly larger layer around it, used for things that stand out from the body: hats and hair, hoods, jacket collars, sleeves and trouser legs. Pixels left empty on it are see-through, so the base layer shows. Choose Outer layer under Paint on to work on it.

Why does an empty pixel on the base layer show black in the game?

The base layer cannot be see-through: the game draws any empty base pixel as solid black. When you save, empty base pixels are written as black so the file matches what you will see, while the outer layer keeps its see-through pixels.

Can I load the skin of a player by their name?

No. That would mean asking another company's servers for it, and this page does not send anything anywhere. If you have a skin file, open it with Open a skin PNG.
