Email caps attachments at about 25 MB, WhatsApp at 16 MB, and a phone records a minute of video at far more than either. Pick the size the video has to fit and this works out the rest: the bitrate that size allows over the video’s length, and a picture size that bitrate can carry without turning to mush - so a short clip stays sharp at full HD and a long one drops to 720p rather than falling apart. Trim it first if only part of it matters; a shorter video can keep more quality in the same space.
Convert changes the format instead - MP4 plays everywhere, WebM suits websites, MOV suits Apple apps - with a choice of size and quality. Audio pulls the soundtrack out as MP3, M4A or WAV, and GIF turns up to twenty seconds into an animation; an animated GIF dropped here goes the other way, into an MP4. The encoding is done by your browser’s own video encoder, usually on the graphics chip, so a minute of 1080p takes seconds rather than minutes. To trim, cut out or join without re-encoding at all, so the quality is untouched and it takes seconds, use the Video Cutter. It is free to use, with no account and no upload limit, and it runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, and while the page stays open, a feature you have already used keeps working offline.
Discord refuses a file over the upload limit with "Your files are too powerful", and a phone records more than a minute of video well past it. Since August 2026 the limit on a free account is 20 MB a file (it was 10 MB before); Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB, and a server boosted to level 2 or 3 lets everyone in it send 50 or 100 MB there.
- How do I convert MTS or M2TS camcorder video to MP4?
- Drop the .mts or .m2ts file here - the AVCHD files Sony, Panasonic and Canon camcorders save in a PRIVATE/AVCHD folder - and choose Convert to MP4. The page decodes it with FFmpeg in your browser, deinterlaces it, turns the Dolby sound most camcorders record into AAC, and makes an H.264 MP4 that plays on any phone, TV or computer; then it can be compressed or trimmed here like any other video. Nothing is uploaded, however large the file.
- What is Discord's file size limit?
- 20 MB a file on a free account since August 2026 (10 MB from 2024 until then), 50 MB with Nitro Basic, and 500 MB with Nitro. In a server boosted to level 2 everyone can upload 50 MB, and at level 3 100 MB, but only in that server; the higher of your own limit and the server's applies. Show Discord's limits above the box to pick any of them under Compress.
- Why won't my iPhone video play in Discord?
- iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) inside a .mov file, which Discord often shows as a file to download rather than a video that plays in the chat. The MP4 made here uses H.264, which Discord plays inline on the desktop app, in browsers and on phones.
- How long a video fits in 20 MB, or 8 MB?
- About a minute at good 720p quality in 20 MB, or around 30 seconds at full HD; a talking-head clip fits more than fast action. For 8 MB, which some servers, bots and apps still use, type 8 in the MB box: about 30 seconds stays clear at 720p. Trimming to the part that matters gives the sharpest result at a given size.
- Will the compressed video really fit the size I pick?
- It is aimed just under it and then checked: the bitrate and picture size are set for the file to land below the size you pick, and if it comes out over a hard limit, or more than a few per cent over another size, it is encoded again a little smaller; if it is still over, the page says so. A very long video will come out soft at a small size, so trimming it to the part that matters gives a sharper result.
- How do I convert MP4 to MP3?
- Open the video, choose Audio, pick MP3 and a bitrate - 192 kb/s is plenty for speech and most music - and press Extract audio. Only the soundtrack is kept, re-encoded as MP3 in your browser.
- Does converting to MP3 lose quality?
- A little: the sound in an MP4 is almost always already compressed (usually AAC), and MP3 compresses it again. At 192 kb/s or more the difference is very hard to hear. If you need it untouched, choose WAV, which is uncompressed, though much larger. Film soundtracks the browser cannot decode (AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, TrueHD) are made into the MP3 by the site's own FFmpeg, downloaded the first time it is needed.
- Can I convert a YouTube link to MP3?
- No. This page converts video files on your own device; it does not download from YouTube or other sites. If you have the video file, open it here.
- How do I make a GIF smaller?
- Make it shorter, narrower or slower: halving the length halves the file, 320 pixels wide is about half the size of 480, and 8 frames a second instead of 15 nearly halves it again. A GIF can hold only 256 colours in each frame, so smooth gradients can show bands, and it has no sound; for anything longer than 20 seconds, a short MP4 is the better format.
- Will the MP4 made from a GIF loop like the GIF?
- A video file has no loop setting of its own: whether it repeats is up to the player. Instagram, TikTok, X and WhatsApp loop short videos by themselves. To build the repeats into the file, choose 2 to 10 plays. Each frame keeps the GIF's own timing, and the MP4 is usually a fraction of the GIF's size.
- Will the video have a watermark?
- No. There is no watermark, no length limit and no account - the video is processed by your own browser and nothing is added to it.
- How do I convert AVI, WMV, FLV or VOB to MP4?
- Drop the file in. Browsers cannot play these older formats, so the page says what the file is - say an AVI with Xvid video, or a DVD's interlaced MPEG-2 - and offers to convert it to MP4 first. FFmpeg, the open-source media library, built for this site, decodes the old video a few seconds at a time, and your browser's own encoder makes the H.264, so it is quick. DVD and camcorder video is deinterlaced and widened to the shape it is shown at. The MP4 then opens here like any other video, to shrink, trim, turn into a GIF or save the sound as MP3 - or just save it. Windows Media, RealAudio, AMR, AC-3 and CAF sound works the same way, as M4A.
- Is my video uploaded to compress or convert it?
- No. The video is opened, compressed or converted in this browser tab on your device; nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else, so a private clip goes from your computer to Discord or WhatsApp and nowhere else.
